i want to make a pooh cake for my son's 1st birthday and i want to do the pooh characters in chocolate transfers. i have a few questions and i hope you gals can help. i'm sorry in advance for sooo many questions.
-candy melts are chocolate right??
-can i color candy melts with regular wilton icing colors or do i need to buy the candy melt coloring?
-would it be better to buy white candy melts and then color them as needed?
-would dark cocoa candy melt give me black? if not how do i get black for the outline?
-if i can use regular icing colors would anyone mind helping me with the combination of colors for the pooh characters? i'm horrible at mixing colors.
thanks.
here's a pic of pooh & friends for color reference.
hmm, how does it taste? my michaels does not have bright colors. is there somewhere online i can get them?
You could try to get candy melts in all of those different colors but I find it easier to buy white and invest in candy colors. You can get candy colors from Wilton, or the ones I have are ChefMaster and my local cake store sells them. They can be ordered online. I use dark chocolate melts for my outline and add a bit of black candy color to it.
Here is a link for a color mixing chart for icing . . . it should be the same for candy:

What are you meaning "CHOCOLATE TRANSFERS?" to make them like frozen buttercream transfer and then put them on the cake als Whimsical Bakehouse technique?
-candy melts are chocolate right??
no, not really, reall chocolate is almost 100% cocoa candy melts contain too much "wax"...real chocolate has a "silky" mouth feel and doesn't "snap" when you bite it. but it's less temperamental than real chocolate which you have to know how to temper.
-can i color candy melts with regular wilton icing colors or do i need to buy the candy melt coloring?
no, yes
-would it be better to buy white candy melts and then color them as needed?
This is an individual prefrence-would dark cocoa candy melt give me black? if not how do i get black for the outline?
you have to add the candy color "black" to get your outline if you want a real black.

We talked about CT's a lot a couple of weeks ago, here is the thread (I actually made winnie the pooh too) if you have time read the whole thread, there is a lot of good stuff in there!

By the way(this might not be in the thread) I pretty much just used the candy melts in their colors (premade) ie yellow for pooh etc. I then mixed some of the candy melts together to obtain lighter or darker shades. In a couple of instances I needed a custom color and I added some of the candy colors. I used darkmelts for outlining and in a couple I did make black using the dark melts and adding black. It still took quite a bit of the black, that is why I stuck with the brown when I could get away with it. Good luck!
Oh and another thing...you can use your regular icing colors if you buy the flo coat from here and mix it into the chocolate. Initially i just bought that and the candy colors. But I will tell you that it does take quite a bit of the color in some instances and it makes the candy taste bad (to me) if that makes any difference. After experiementing I personally thought it was A LOT easier to just buy the colors already made. But I am sure other people feel differently.
