A co-worker has referred my name to 2 people for wedding cakes and out of those two people I now have a wedding cake job. I told her I would cut the cake for her but at a fee. Here's what I am thinking of charging her.
$1.50 per serving for buttercream iced cake (120 servings)
told additional price per serving if she wants fillings (she doesn't)
$10 delivery charge (gotta cover my gas expenses)
$40 cake cutting charge (to cover my time and my gas expense of having to drive back out to the reception hall)

$180
$ 10
$ 40
--------
$230
50% down now and the other half due 2 weeks before the wedding, 25% non-refundable if cake order canceled after the downpayment.
I've included the design that she likes the best of the ideas that I gave her. (would be bigger for wedding)

Definitely adding the serving fee is a good idea. Some reception halls in hotels will charge this even if they do the cake.

Seems good! I also like the idea of adding the serving fee. That's something I've never thought about.
*Note to self: Add serving fees in the contract!*

You're welcome!
I volunteered to be a team captain for my work! It's been great coming up with some cool fundraiser ideas for our company.

Definetly add the cutting fee! You may be saving the couple money and you have the chance to make more

There are many halls that charge for this, some as high as $1 per slice! icon_eek.gif
Some halls charge a flat rate, around $100.

I just heard of a going rate of $50/hr-minimum 2 hours for staying to cut, so I think that not completely out of line. Your price for the cake is really low. I don't think that's necessarily bad, but then delivery is only $10-you could charge a LOT more-especially since you have to drive slow, set up, etc. That could take you a couple of hours!

I definately think you should add a cake cutting fee to serve your cake. As others have pointed out, cake cutting fees are often added by the catering facility. The most outrageous price I am familiar with is $2.00 per slice. You can't imagine my outrage to realize this establishment makes as much as my base price for wedding cakes! I have since confirmed this with others whose cakes I have delivered to this establishment! (The owner, by the way, refused to have the bride arrange her own "cake cutter".)
I have to fight the urge to tell customers that I will not make a cake to be served from that "event center". I realize there is a certain expense involved with serving the cake on china plates with flatware that has to be washed, but I think she is highly over-paying her dishwasher! (<~~ poor attempt at humor~~). I do however, suggest to some clients who have not confirmed the reception site, that they make sure to ask about additional costs for services that aren't stated in the basic catering package.
Back to the topic...sorry for that digression...I think your pricing is perfectly reasonable. You should be compensated for your time and travel expenses. I deliver within 10 miles of my home (over paved roads <~~~ learned that from experience icon_wink.gif ) as a complementary service. Anything over ten miles, I charge starting at $35.00 on up depending on the mileage. I think it reasonable. It is an "insurance policy" for the customer, actually. If I am delivering and a mishap occurs, I will refund their money. If they are picking up their own cake, it will be completely their loss if anything happens to it during transport & setup.
Congratulations on your first "Wedding Cake" job! thumbs_up.gif

icon_cry.gif I lost the cake order to cupcakes! icon_sad.gif
They found someone to make the number of cupcakes they need for under $100 icon_eek.gif That's less than a dollar a cupcake if they are going to order 120 cupcakes!
This SUCKS!!!!!

that DOES stink...but maybe if they are THAT cheap it's just as well. At least you won't have to worry about them trying to nickel and dime you after the fact about some "problem." Here's to your next wedding cake order!

I can feel your pain...I lost one to Walmart icon_cry.gif As for the cupcakes, just wait until they get into baking and decorating. I just did 72 of them Sat. and only put sprinkles on them @ $1.00 each...boy, next time the price will definitely be higher.

I would rather decorate a cake anytime over cupcakes icon_rolleyes.gif

Don't worry mOuse, you will get two in place of that one icon_wink.gif

I would like to thank you also for walking, my mother is a diabetic.
