how many are needed using a round 12 inch x 3 inch pan. 1 or 2?

Don't know about 12" round, but for a 9x13, one worked perfectly.

Yesterday I cooked two 14" rounds with 6 nails...perfect cake and two 10" rounds with 2 nails...again perfect cake. Both were WASC so I would say 3 or 4 nails would work. Happy baking!

Yaknow, I've never used a nail in any size cake, although I read that a lot of people do. I just turn the temp down for large cakes and they are fine.

I turn my temp down by 25 deg and use one nail for up to 10" - two nails for 12" and up. They work great!

I use 1 nail for 12" or bigger and get perfect results every time

I don't understand the nail thing. Is it just a flower making nail? What do I do with it? Why? Is it just on certain cakes? Please help me.

I made a 10" and 12" heart shape WASC cake yesterday and used 1 nail for each cake, and they turned out perfect.
Crablegs- yes it is the flower nail you use to make flowers, just turn it upside (make sure to spray with cake release, or grease it.)with flat part to bottom of pan in the middle, pour cake mix around it. It takes the place of what is called a heat core. Dont like the heat core because it leaves a hole in the middle of cake. Using the flower nail doesn't leave that big of hole, just the size of the nail. The say to use them on anything from a 10" and up to insure even cooking in the middle. Hope that helps.

The flower nail acts as a heat conductor and allows the middle of the cake to bake at the same rate as the cake sides. It is advisable to be used on 10" and larger cakes.
