I had an order for an 8 inch cake, frosted with my standard buttercream with no decoration just so he could taste one of my cakes before his mother's birthday party in August.
I delivered it yesterday.
Last night I received 2 phonecalls past the time I take calls, so I let them go to voicemail - no voicemails were left.
This morning at 7:00 I get a phonecall and it wakes me up and it's him - lucky for me he couldn't tell I had been asleep - anyway...
He wanted me to come down to the theatre (he's a night janitor there) and taste the cake. It had holes, it wasn't done all the way, or something - he kept changing his story. Because he kept changing his story, I brought DH with me because it sure as heck sounded like someone was trying to get a free cake and Ben is the business manager for my business - I give in too easy.
Anyway - we drag the ENTIRE family out of bed and down there. He has me taste it. It's normal cake - just moist. He's used to grocery store cakes. I tell him it is normal and he orders a full sheetcake for August.![]()
Seriously. You had to drag me down there for that.
<--me restraining myself from telling him where he can stick the fullsheet cake.
And now, I'm going back to bed.
Rachel
Awww Rachel I'm sorry you had to deal with such a jerk....... so early in the morning. Maybe he needs to just go to the darn grocery store next time if he's going to be that big of a PITA! lol.
Get some sleep and have some sweet dreams of cakes and cupcakes lol
He's sounds a little bizarre!
Hopefully you got a deposit from him! ![]()
And let hubby deliver the cake , don't go alone!
That's weird, I'm glad you took your dh with you. Sounds dangerous actually!
Secondly I'm not as nice as you are! Not many cake orders are worth me getting up that early and going somewhere. We have to talk hundreds of dollars before I would drag my family out to taste a cake. ![]()
I would have been like "The cake was totally normal, I'm sorry you didn't like it. Best of luck to you."

This is exactly what I was thinking, too. First he sounds like a whacko, and I'm glad your DH went with you - sorry you had to take the kids.
If it was me there'd be no way I'd be getting up that early for something so trivial.
Call during NORMAL hours.
Actually I might be a worry wart but I often have in the back of my head the possible dangers of home cake pickups and etc.
I mean think about it...a night watchman calling a female baker to come "taste" his "bad" cake. She suspects nothing and arrives to find security cameras turned off and....
Ick.
Its always in the back of my mind when strangers come to pick up cakes, but even more so for wedding tastings...they make me nervous until I feel out the couple.
From reading the title, I thought you had a customer from PITA (the animal people) who was mad about your cakes because you used eggs or something. ![]()
I'm really glad you took DH with you because the red flags went up when I read "He wanted me to come down to the theatre (he's a night janitor there) and taste the cake" Strange man, night watchman, alone with him - I'm not getting good feelings here. But luckily, it all turned out ok (the guy just lacks knowledge about what constitutes a good cake!) , and I'm sure his mother will be thrilled with her birthday cake.
Maybe you need to post your business hours on your website, business cards and contracts ![]()

Hee hee, the animal people are PETA.... and I'll resist the temptation to make any further comment to avoid possibly offending anyone here who is a member of PETA. ![]()
What is a PITA?
Pain In The A$$
I totally agree with you. I'm going to be out of town the week of his mother's birthday. ![]()
The way the phonecall went he was totally trying to get the 30 bucks back that he paid for the cake. He bought the cake so he could taste it - Two (large) slices were out of the cake and the numerous different things he used as excuses totally made me think that it was a case of - I only wanted to taste it but don't want to pay 30 bucks for a taste, so let's get my money back.
First he told me he wanted me to come look at a picture. I told him to slide under my husband's office door (which is locked) and I'll come look at it later. He than told me that there were holes in the cake.
And two seconds later that the cake wasn't done all the way. Which is absolute horse puckey cuz I torted and filled the cakes. I KNOW WHAT THE CENTER LOOKED LIKE. ![]()
He argued with me not coming down there to the point where he wanted to come to my home. Ummm... no. And his previous two phonecalls the night before - 3 minutes apart with no voicemail - let me know this wouldn't be the end of it and so I went. I brought Ben with me because he wouldn't intimidate Ben.
Ben was there & all of a sudden he kept repeating over and over - nothing is wrong with the frosting and I'm just not used to the cake. And than jumped into talking about his mother's cake which is a full sheetcake. The thing that gets me about this? HE IS GETTING A DIFFERENT FLAVOR THAN HE ORDERED FOR HIS TASTING. He's going with chocolate. ![]()
Made me so mad.
Rachel
He is a PITA! I would've been really ticked off if I went down there for that. With family in tow. You are nicer than me because I would've told him he'd have to bring it by when he was off duty.
Who calls a business and demands them to come by their home or work to come taste what they bought? He lacks some serious manners.
Good luck on his mother's cake! I have a feeling we'll be seeing another post from you. ![]()
I agree with the fact you'll be busy the week he needs his moms cake lol. I would avoid this one at all costs! Good thing he paid for his sample cake that was so horible tasting that he ate TWO whole big slices of it lmfao.... make sense dude! Next time if he calls tell him Little Debbie sells a very nice chocolate cake ![]()
That is SOOOOOOOOOOOO creepy all the way around. Oh , please keep being careful with this nut and make sure DH is always around. IMHO I wouldn't take any more orders from him! What a creep! The numerous calls are total excess, I saw red flags in my head reading your whole post ![]()
That scares me for you!!! Please don't do his mom's cake... he could be some whacko cake rapist or something!?! A night janitor at a theatre?
Okay, so I watch too much forensic files, but still..... ![]()
Thank goodness for your hubby... just say no to the sheetcake! Good luck! ![]()
I'm with the crew here! Hearing those knights from Monty Python in my head...."Run away, run away!"
...........Please don't do his mom's cake... he could be some whacko cake rapist or something!?! A night janitor at a theatre? ........

I read this and even though I've never seen the movie I do know what it's about and visions of that movie popped into my head - American Pie! ![]()
