My golden ginger dust - I think some part of every cake gets it!
Oooooh, I'm such a girly girl, it would have to be lustre dusts and disco glitter - if I can get them on a cake somehow, then I do (including the ones for men/boys ![]()

!)!
My husband!!
He cleans up after me, cuts all my boards and dowels, builds new counters and cabinets when I want them, helps me deliver, takes my photos and prints them for me,feeds me and himself when I am busy with cake, does the laundry and housework if I am baking and samples all my new concoctions. (I'm sure he likes that part the best)
I could make do without some piece of equipment, I suppose, but not him.

Where can I find one of those?!! ![]()
Big icer tip...
I don't crumb coat once I learned about the big icer tip. Just cover the entire cake and smooth. I NEVER get crumbs on my icing.... and it speeds the process for me.!

WOW!!! My husband stays as FAR as possible from where I am working with cakes!!!
i want one of those supportive husbands!!! ![]()
i'm not sure what item i could NOT live without.... but featherweight bags are probably right up there, if not the number one.... but my cheapo turntable is also key.... my expensive one is a piece of crap!
I have an island that I roll into the kitchen with all my stuff that I need from the storage area (the dining room) I could not do it with out that thing. Its movable & it is extra counter space also. I LOVE IT
. I got it at Walmart.
i agree with the glitter/sanding sugar!! and also the turntable and especially parchment triangles for piping-- clean up is so much easier.
by the way, on the big icer tip-- i think you have to use those with a featherweight bag, right? is there an easy way to clean them out and assure they're dry when done? i think i may try icing cakes this way to avoid crumb coating...
I lOVE the icer tip, too. I never crumb coat either. It takes way too long. The icer tip is so easy and fast. I don't even have to crumb coat a chocolate cake when I use the icer tip. You will need a 16'' bag to use with it though. It won't fit in the smaller bags.

Does CC count as a piece of equipment I couldn't live without?
My cake leveler is also on the list. I definitely couldn't torte a cake (evenly) without out it. Just call me "dead eye dick."
I simply can not pick just one - my icer tip, cheapo turntable, and copy paper for smoothing are MUST HAVES for equipment. Definitely agree that I could not live without CC; Seriously do not know what I did before I found it (other than having more productive days at my paying job!).
Have a great day everyone!
for those of you who said turntable....which one do you love? I want to invest in one but dont know what to buy (I hear the Wilton Tilting one is terrible).
I have the Wilton tilting one. I don't hate it but, I am very glad I used a 50% off coupon to buy it. I would love to find a better one!
I would have to say for me that the one thing I could not do w/out is ALL OF YOU!!!
I can't tell you how much I've learned and the troubles you've saved me. I'm serious! Ask my husband, he'll tell you. He used to think I was so clever, now he asks, "did you get that from someone on CC?" The answer is almost always "YES!"
Whenever I'm doing a cake for someone - and at this point, most of them are first time ones - you guys help me fill in the stuff I don't think to ask or just make me laugh when I get frustrated w/ one. (worst cakes thread...hilarious!)
So pardon my gushing, but you are all worthy of it! ![]()

I totally agree. 99.9% of what I know I have learned here at Cake Central. I love this place!! ![]()
IHATEFONDANT - Thanks for the post. My husband thinks he is the only one out there! Doesn't take away from my appreciation though!
I have the Wilton tilting turntable and use it all the time but I too bought it with a 50% coupon. Would have regretted it otherwise. It REALLY helps with decorating the sides of the cake. But caution...it is not as stable as you would expect.
Viva papertowels and my newfound favorite - a bench scraper.
I posted a pic yesterday of the first cake I made using the bench scraper. Wow, what a difference it makes! Nice, clean, straight sides!

I use a 21 inch bag. I have shared this tip many times: I put my icing on a piece of plastic wrap. Roll the frosting over the wrap so that there are two open ends, mold the wrapped frosting into a triange, twist up the fat end, and drop the triangle of wrapped frosting into the bag. When all the frosting is used up, toss out the squished plastic wrap and start a new one. The bag barely gets any frosting on the sides at all! Just in the bottom.
