I have an order for a doll cake (wonder mold) but I need to feed 25-30 people. I'm not sure how many this pan feeds and wonder if I should put it on top of another cake (but not a sheet cake as the customer doesn't like them) or make some cupcakes to go with it. The customer doesn't care which I do. I'll be using whipped cream buttercream for the doll cake and whatever else I make to go with it. Thanks!

I would make either an 8 inch round to go under the wondermold or do some cupcakes. I don't think the wondermold alone is going to be enough cake.

I agree. I think you should put the wondermold cake on top of an 8" round or square. I've seen it done on this site (somewhere), and it looked very nice! Plus, the more cake, the more "canvas" you have to work with! Maybe that would give you room to write "Happy Birthday", and even incorporate more of the theme!?! HTH!

It only uses one cake mix. Although Wilton says that might serve 24, that is silly. A normal person won't get that many cuts from the wondermold pan. I think 18 tops for the wondermold. Cupcakes will be much easier to serve, than putting the doll on top of another cake. IMHO

I have done several of the doll cakes (which are posted in my gallery) and usually what I do is place the doll cake on a platform of a 9" cake which gives me a little more room to write on the cake. You may even want to add the cupcakes around the side for additional servings as well. But I can say that I agree with JoAnnB the Wondermold serves 15-18 at the most. Good luck and have fun decorating!

If you are going to put a real Barbie in it, you will need to put an 8" or 9" round under it for the body to fit. Otherwise, it's too short.

I put mine on top of a 10 inch round...It was enough for 25-30 and the servings were quite generous.Edited to say that I added an extra 10 ich cake under the wondermold otherwise a standard Barbie doll is too tall for just the wondermold. The extra cake helps make the skirt fuller and more servings.

I just did one last wknd. I added a square cake on the bottom. you can see it in my photos, it's a bratz doll cake.
I have to say i really like how it look w/a round right underneath. (from kiddiekakes). that's just awesome, too bad i didn't think of it when i did it.

Kiddiekakes - What did you use for the bodice, number and nameplate? What a pretty cake!

Thanks, everyone, for the ideas!

Here's my doll cake that I put on a 10" round. It is a simple cake as it was my first one. Hope this helps!

chocomama,

I used fondant for the bodice and did royal icing cornelli lace. Then I painted it with silver lustre dust. The number was candy melts and dusted with super pearl lustre dust...Name plate was fondant and dusted again with superpearl.

Kiddiekakes - Do you have a mold for the #3? I'm trying to figure out how you did that in chocolate. My customer likes simple lines so I want to make her a beautiful cake without it being too "busy" for her, but she doesn't want fondant, which, I think would, be the best way to go.

I just piped a 3..with the white candy melts in a bag..I didn't have a mold!! Here's the template I used for the banner!! You could pipe that also with candy melts.

OK, another question! Should I make a single layer cake underneath or a double? They only need to feed btw 25-30 people so I'm thinking single. ??

I made one cake and torted it...A double layer would make it really high!!

Kiddiekakes - Really? Yours looks like it could be 2 layers. Thanks for telling me. As long as it feeds enough people, I'll be happy! Thank you!

Hey there! I just did one, and I used a 12 inch single layer underneath. This allowed me to put some decorations around the edge as well. It's the Cinderella cake in my photos (sorry - I'm at work and don't have the picture here to attach into the email). I also used a full size Barbie doll, since she was too long for just the Wondermold pan, and that way the doll was part of the little girl's birthday present. If you use one, make sure you wrap her in Saran Wrap first so that when you take her out later, it's a lot easier to clean. Also - when you're ready to put her in - just shove her right down from the top of the Wonder mold cake and it stays put perfectly. All that advice I got from other people on Cake Central, so I can't take credit for any of it, but it all helped me do my first doll cake last month! And I love Cinderella, so I really enjoyed doing it.
Have fun!
