How do I get over my fear of covering a cake with fondant? I've never done it and I have a friend who really (REALLY) wants her BD cake to be covered in fondant. I've used it to model with but I have this overwhelming fear that if I try to cover a cake with it is going to look like...poo-poo icon_lol.gif Help please!

You can do it. It's just like rolling out pie crust. Practice with a small 6" cake and you'll see that it's easy. And mistakes can be covered with decor icon_smile.gif

Yes, you can def. do it. I'm not all that great at decorating cakes and I've covered a few in fondant. it was no biggie. I, personally, find that MMF is the easiest to use. Not only that, its cheap. So if I would've messed up, I wouldn't be out a whole lot of money.

You'll just have to try and see.

The only way to get over the fear is to do it! I waited a long time to try it (see my white square present cake, it was my first) but once I did I couldn't figure out why I waited so long.

When you get ready if you decide you want to make it I highly suggest buying some wilton fondant (DO NOT USE IT on the cake) just use it as a guidline for what consistency your fondant should be. I did not do this and was guessing at what it should feel like. Once I had played with some so I knew what it was suppose to be like it made it a lot easier to make it.

As you can see my first was all white, I didn't want to worry about coloring etc.. i was just practicing to play around with it and work with techniques.

I was terrified too. I am in the middle of taking course 3 and fondant and gumpaste. Just make sure you roll your fondant large enough (min. the total of the 2 sides of cakes plus top of cake for example 8" cake 4" high would be 4+8+4=16). I also set my cake on a smaller pan to raise it up for the fondant to have room to drape. Instead of a wheel or cutter I found my small angled/tapered spatula worked best for cutting off excess. I had tons of fun and couldn't believe how easy it was compared to how I thought it would be. The first two are in my pics - square present and the green one with the swag etc.

SO GO FOR IT!

I truly think fondant is easier than buttercream.

Don't be scared! what's the worst that can happen? You have to throw it away and start over, so what.

But really, you can't mess up. I just started doing cakes and I have made the MMF on cc and it has been great.

So easy to make... only recommendation, keep your mat greased well icon_smile.gif

Go ahead... try it!

I just discovered MMF on CC a little while ago and I tried it! It was simple! I just made sure I rolled it out much bigger than I needed. I rolled it out flat and then laid it over the rolling pin to lift and transfer to the cake. Then I trim the excess thats hanging down first so as not to let it tear or pull the cake down. Then just smooth the top and pull out and down while doing the sides! It really is quiet easy.
