Ok, so I have been reading alot of posts here and I now have a question of my own. I will explain and then ask. I have not taken any cake classes, I have only done one paid cake to date but have a couple of orders. Right now I bake at home. Can I get in trouble for this? I know it is different in each state, but I have tried to look at the local guidelines online, but I am having a hard time with that. I just want to make sure that I will not get into trouble right now. I know if I start doing alot of cakes I will eventually have to do something else. But being since I am just starting does it matter????? Any thoughts would really help.

Texas is very strict. If you are reported or caught by the health department you can be fined and orderd to stop.

That said, many decorators keep a low profile, and sell only to friends and family.

If you advertise, they will find you.

Thanks, that is good to know. I haven't been advertising so maybe I will be ok for now. I guess I just need to go to the health dept. and get any info needed. I am so new to this that I still feel lost. But thanks again.

there have been several threads about texas cracking down on illegal home bakers. many have been ordered to stop, i don't know if they have been fined or not. i would be cautious, knowing that texas is being very vigilant!

i definitly will. i dont want to get into trouble. my MIL owns a cafe so i am thinking maybe i could get licensed to bake out of her kitchen. its just a thought. i would hate to get shut down right after i start.

getting licensed from MIL's kitchen is your best bet. the health department will help.
