I am still fairly new to cake decorating and I keep reading about Americolor being "truer" to color, not as much mixing...

As I am starting to run out of my Wilton colors, I was just wondering, what Americolor colors should I start with? How much are they in comparison ? Do you use more or less than the Wilton colors? Do they have a taste?

Does Michaels carry it?

Any input is helpful - thanks CC

YES! Americolor.

richer, deeper, better!
little to no taste -- esp. the red!!!!

for the caterpillar cake I made, the head was read...I was happily suprised who little americolor "red red" it took to get a vibrant red....and NO bad taste like w/ wilton. -- only problem...a good one really -- was that red-red be strong stuff!!! can still see a hint it on one of my cuticles!!! this after 10 days!

get the americolors right here on your favorite cake site -- like so many of us did/do. just head over to the CC store (click shop tab at top)

My biggest problem with Americolors was to un-learn my wilton habit and start using LESS!! A little goes a long way to get great colors. Love super red and super black. What colors you choose also depends on what colors you like and use the most of. Basics for me should include red, black, brown, green, blue and then the sky is the limit! I think they are still on sale in the store here. Check it out!

Super red is the best for a true red color. There is a post somewhere by ColorBoy (the official Americolor rep) that goes over what each shade of red looks like.

I just got a selection of Americolors and am fazing out my Wilton colors. I've tried a couple of them, and they are great! Just use a tiny bit though, much much less than you use with wilton! I agree with everyone else and reccomend them as well.

I'm also a HUGE Americolor fan. Just went to [edited out competing seller name] last week and purchased Super Red, Super Black and each primary color (along with ivory and brown) in the 4.5 oz bottles! LOVE them! The best thing I like is that there is no risk of contamination because they're squirt bottles! Yeah, no more toothpicks!

I am a new americolor convert and will never go back to Wilton in fact yesterday at hobbylobby I didn't even look at the colors because americolor is so much better. I agree with everyone else and get the colors you use the most and then get more from there.

Another vote for Americolor!!!

I overheard a Wilton instructor say to someone that she would have to start with chocolate icing to get a black color and even then that it would be bitter....I thought to myself...not with Americolor it won't. I have used white icing and turned it pure black in seconds with Americolor.

Wilton has some great products, but for colors, Americolor wins hands down. And a bonus is you use much, much less.

8.00 shipping for a small bottle is a wee bit steep for me.

Im SO gunna try these!! I thought it was just me that you had to use a LOT of Wilton colors to get a good color. Everything I was making was turning out pale! I had to resort to using the handle of a spoon to actually get a good color! YAY!!!! thumbs_up.gif

As with everyone else, I HIGHLY recommend the Americolors. I still can't get over how much nicer they are to work with than Wilton. And you can actually reproduce colors in separate batches!! Just count drops the first time, and you can make a 2nd batch exactly the same! Try doing THAT with Wilton! icon_surprised.gif I have tried the RedRed and the Super Red. I prefered the Super Red myself, but that's just me. I like reds that have a blue undertone. Other favorite colors of mine are: Electric Green, Ivory, Super Black, Egg Yellow, oh heck! I love 'em all! icon_razz.gif

Just wanted to add my two cents about Americolor. I used to be a loyal Wilton colors user, until I discovered Americolor. Now I'm just waiting for the day when my Wilton colors are finally gone! I have lots of Americolor colors now, and they are so superior to Wilton!!!!! thumbs_up.gif
