You could do a spaghetti cake. Or a meatloaf that looks like a cake. Just search the forums for these and you'll find instructions for it. HTH.

I did something similar a while back with a 'strawberry pie' cake. It was fairly simple. I made the cake using a pie pan; covered from the bottom up in fondant and molded the crust with my fingers to resemble the crust. Then covered the top in strawberry buttercream; layered strawberries on top; and did lattice work over the strawberrys to resemble the pie crust.
Your idea of an 'apple pie' cake sounds GREAT for the 4th (good old hot dogs, apple pie, and baseball!). Maybe stick a gumpaste american flag into the 'pie' and design a red, white and blue themed baseboard.

What about a Watermelon Cake? Either a whole one or one that is cut in half. Maybe you could do little wedges of watermelon as well.

I don't know if it would work, but what about placing fondant in the bottom of the pie pan, and then filling it with mini cake balls made of red velvet (to look like cherries). Fill it all with cherry filling, and then top with fondant in a criss cross pattern. Simple but would look like a cherry pie. Just a thought.

Ok since the watermelon is out. What about a "bowl of potato chips" cake? You could make the cake in a bowl shape and cover with fondant. Make gumpaste potato chips piled in a bowl. You could maybe do the Ruffle potato chips.

Probably a little weird. icon_biggrin.gif

How about a grill with burger and dogs on it. I saw a few in the gallery for Father's Day.
