as I look through the gallery of pictures I see some saying that they fill their cakes wih raspberry or strawberry filling and frost w/ buttercream. My question is this: when they say they "fill" their cakes does that just mean what they spread between their layered cakes or does that mean they put a hole in their cake and fill it w/ their filling?

"Filling" for cakes is generally a layer spread between the layers of cake. To 'torte' is the split the layer in to two layers and fill between those. I would make a normal 2-layer cake into a 4-layer cake.

Simple filling can be simply a layer of buttercream, or buttercream mixed with jam, or even just jam.

Oh Okay, thank you, I think I understand now. I thought maybe that's what filling meant but I wasn't sure about the torting or whatever it's called....I was a little confused.LOL

Don't feel dumb - when filling a cupcake you DO put the filling into a big hole. icon_smile.gif
