I made a batch of icing this past weekend for a hello kitty cake that I did. The icing was a light turquoise color. Why does my icing look swirled every time I mix blue?? Am I using the wrong recipe or what?? Here is the recipe I use:

1 1/2 cups Crisco
1 stick margarine
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
powdered sugar

Is this a bad ratio for mixing Wilton paste colors?? I am doing cupcakes next month with this same color and I would really like to figure this out. Any help would be so great! TIA

By swirled I'm thinking you mean it's not mixed in enough? I use the wilton blue paste and pretty much the same icing as you and dont have any problems. I think you're just not mixing it well enough. I've done it with my hand mixer and with a regular knife and have no problems

It might just be the coloring you're using. The same thing happens to me when I use the Wilton blue coloring. Try the Americolor blue; it doesn't do that.

With the Wilton Pastes you have to mix very thoroughly! Even with just a small amount. Keep mixing and you'll get it!!

thanks for the responses... I think maybe if I mix a little of the color with water before adding it to my batch of icing may help?? I will try it and let you know if it changes anything! Thanks again! Oh, and I am also going to try the Americolor this time too.

Could it be that you are using Crisco and margarine? Most of the recipes I have seen call for butter and shortening. Maybe that there's not enough fat molecules for the color to "grab" onto?!? Just an idea...

I have never used margarine, so that could be the culprit. I do know that I thinned out my icing a little to much once and I got a speckled kind of color going on. Its sounds like what your describing. I would try starting fresh thumbs_up.gif

I had this same problem when using Wilton blue or purple colors; I had spots of color that would "bloom" in the icing. I would mix it thoroughly, but whenever I came back to it later, the dots of color would appear.
Also, another problen I had was the Wilton was giving my icing a bitter taste.
After being frustrated numerous times, and one "cake-tastophe" I finally went and bought all Americolor colors.
