I was worrying so much about this cake, but everything was actually going well for a change. My husband took the kiddos out of the house for several hours and I even easily got my mmf black! So as the day is coming to a close I am putting the final touches on the cake and I insert the bunny ears. I *think* they are going to stay put. So I go outside after a full day of decorating to play with the kids for awhile before they need to go to bed. When I came in a short time later the ears had broken off and were laying next to the cake! The gumpaste hadnt completely hardened before inserting them into the cake and had softened. (I dont know if gumpaste normally softens again??) I paniced for a short period....A bunny NEEDS ears! I thought maybe he could be a lop eared bunny but that looked stupid. I was getting so tired and frustrated at this point. So then I thought of this craft foam I had bought for the kids and it worked very well. I was a little disappointed that they werent "edible" but I was satisfied. Disaster averted!

Great job on the cake. thumbs_up.gif I'm saving that one for sure!

About the gumpaste going soft, it happened to me as well when I made a space shuttle cake. I made a fin that was to stand straight up in the back of the shuttle. I made it weeks ahead and it was solid. I put it into the cake in the evening and when the cake was cut the next day, the part in the cake was soft. Luckily it was short and stayed up but now I've learned. The part going into the cake has to be fake (like the dowels).

thanks everyone. I guess I am thinking that the gumpaste must absorb moisture and soften. Maybe someone knows for sure, but i wont be making that mistake again. I just had assumed that once it was dry it would stay hard. Guess not!!

I just had a thought. What if you used a small piece of plastic wrap over the part that's going to be inserted into the cake? This way it would set up a barrier between the gumpaste and the cake and hopefully prevent the gumpaste from absorbing moisture.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Actually I ended up putting the foam ears in those plastic dowel rods and had I though of that before I could have put my gumpaste ears in them
