I made a 3 D Gymbo the clown cake for a friend of a friend yesterday. I was so proud of it, I didn't want to let it go! This is part of the e-mail I just received from her:

"...Just had to let you know that I had a bit of a Gymbo disaster on the way home. I drove so slowly...and so cautiously, and he still took a 'header'. He toppled over backwards and swashed the whole back half of him, so I ended up cutting the back off and laying him flat on the cake board and bringing him to the Gymboree party that way. So, it all worked out and everyone still thought he was gorgous..."

AAAGGGHHHH! I can't believe how nice she was about it! This is what he looked like before his accident. RIP Gymbo. ouch.gif

Such a cute cake! Too bad it fell over, that is why I always deliver my cakes. It is a hassel but I'm so anal, want to make sure it gets there. My honey does the driving while I hold the cake and complain about his driving all the way. Lucky he still takes me home!! Really a great job on the cake, my 5 year old grandson loves it.

Awww! That's so disappointing. At least your friend was understanding and you got a pic of him standing upright! Did you put a sharpened dowel through the whole thing? That might help. I was thinking of making a tall, narrow cake like that and i feared it falling over during transport, so I changed my mind and am saving the idea for my son...when I dont have to drive it anywhere!

Great cake! Too bad it happened but at least your friend was keen enough to cut off the back as I'm sure it still looked great on its back.

It's too bad that happened, but at least he didn't fall forward icon_lol.gif All kidding aside, though, that was one adorable cake, and very well done.

I had the same fear when I made a stand up elephant and had to drive it 20 miles. I placed him on two styrofoam rounds covered with foil, and stuck a sharpened dowel rod all the way through. He didn't move!!!
Hope this helps for the next time!

Thanks for all your comments! I had lots of cake orders that weekend and had run out of time to go buy dowels....so, I had used skewers (wooden ones for bbq'ing shishkabobs) encased in straws instead!! icon_redface.gifthumbsdown.gif Obviously, I will NEVER do that again!! Next time I will use a proper dowel, and I think I'll put a turtleneck on Gymbo too, to glue him to his shoulders better!!!
