I can never find anything Wilton on Ebay that is any cheaper than buying it at Michael's or Wal-Mart. Especially by the time shipping charges are added. There are a few discontinued things to be found, but other than that, I never have any luck. Am I missing something? Maybe a secret search technique? detective.gif

I agree with dianagreen. I will stick my 40% coupons. You really have to watch the shipping on Ebay. Some of the sellers are way out of line with their cost. They call it "Shipping & Handling". icon_surprised.gif

Its best to research your item before bidding on E-Bay. I found a cookbook at the bookstore for $40! Went on E-Bay and got it for $13! If you know the retail value of an item before you bid you are less likely to pay more than what its worth I have did that several times till I got smart and started researching my prices first.

I have bought lots of featherweight bags on ebay. I usually buy them in a bundle but have gotton them as cheap as $1.50 per bag! Now that is better than any coupon I have ever seen.

The KA I won I think I got a pretty good deal on. Shipping was soso. But, then I work 12 hr days 3 days a week and 6 hrs on Wed. The other days, I'm resting, cooking or running errands. And the cake decorating board, I didn't see in Michaels or WalMart, not to mention the time it takes me to get to Michael's or Walmart and gas. So, hey $2 shipping on small stuff, is ok with me.

I did see Dede Wilson wedding cake decorating book for like $11 but the $9 shipping tag turned me off.

Yeah, a lot of sellers on eBay will rip you off with shipping and handling. When I sell I try to stay as close to the actual cost to ship as possible. I think that trying to make money off of shipping is so wrong.....even if there is something that I really want, if the shipping is too high I make myself pass. What really irritates me is when you know what you paid for shipping, say $5 only to see the .97 cent postage stamp on the envelope that it came in, and no, no fancy packaging, just a plain old envelope!!! Sorry, talking about S&H on eBay really got to me tonight!!! icon_smile.gif

I agree. 40% coupons at Michaels is much better than ebay.
Most of the stuff is the same price as Michaels and Walmart and my cake suppy place.

I agree, I use the 40% off (and sometimes when I find a 50% off) coupon at Michaels or A.C. Moore. I've only bought one decorating thing on ebay- a discontinued 3-D pan. I always add the cost of the shipping and handling in my head to a bid before I make it, and ask myself if it is worth that price. I did find the perfect cake topper for my wedding cake though. I had seen it in a floral magazine years ago when I did floral design and I said to myself then, if I ever get married, that's the topper I want on my cake (that was the early 90's). It retalied for over $100 at the time but I figured maybe I could get it wholesale or something. I was searching ebay about this time 2 years ago and found it (about a month before I got married)! I paid something like $13 including shipping and it came all the way from Washington State! It was meant to be, I won it and still can't believe my find! It was a pair of porcelain doves. I still love it, it now sits in my china cabinet along with the gumpaste flowers from my wedding cake! Just had to share that, I thought you all might be able to appreciate the thrill of finding the perfect topper to a cake, and best of all, your own wedding cake! icon_biggrin.gif

OOOHHH!! that's too awesome! definately meant to be!!!
My thing with ebay is im in a small town and to get to Wal Mart takes me 1/2 hour. To get to Michaels is a good 45 mins to an hou. *sigh* Tragedy for anyone to have to live that far from a Wal Mart. LOL So I figure by the time I spend the gas to get there and back.. well i'd rather sit here and read posts while my "prize" is coming to me. LOL When I find something I've wanted I'll pull my wilton catalog out and compare prices. LOL

I agree that sometimes the shipping is outrageous. I recently read why that is, though. Ebay charges a final value fee on anything you sell. But there is no charge on shipping. So if someone knows they can sell something, they will jack up shipping to like $25, and sell it for $25 less. That way they owe ebay less in final value fees.

I know it's a crappy loophole, but if you look at it from a seller's standpoint, it's pretty smart. I refuse to do it. I feel it's dishonest, but a lot of people do it. My husband was looking for memory cards for his mp3 player, and they wanted $25 in shipping. REALLY. For a piece of plastic that weighs less than 1/2 ounce. At least he still got a really great price on the darn thing, even with the highway robbery shipping.

E-bay is best for finding things that just aren't avalible, for instance china that is no longer produced. It is definitely is cheaper than Replacements, LTD. But it is definitely a Caveat Emptor situation.

I do not see much in the way of deals, I agree I think when they first started out there was probably some real bargains. I think you just as well going to garage sales or finding someone that is getting out of decorating to find true deals. You really need to know the priceof something to determine if its a good price. It has truly become a den of greed. The shipping business is where its at.

You can report sellers who are charging horrendous shipping/handling fees.

I've seen them offer items for .99cents and then tag on a $20.00 shipping/handling fee for something that might weigh 12 ounces..

I report them.

For the longest time I loved ebay. But now....... I'm so aggravated......... seems like lately, I deal with every crooked or bad person on there. You have what I think is a good transaction, then they leave you negative feedback for a stupid reason. Then I bought a CD, turns out it was bootleg.... A lot of people I have dealt with lately are flat up crooks, and I don't get what I bought......... or I sold a set of CD's, and the guy got a super deal, boxed set of beatle CD's that I saw at Sam's for $80, he buys it for less than $30, claims the box was torn up, it wasn't. I think if I hadn't insured it, he would have claimed he didn't get it..... he did not want insurance on it, so I paid for it, glad I did....... then the ones that go well, they write you nice thank you e-mails, and they don't leave feedback........... maybe I'm just having an atypical experience lately, like I said, I liked it for a long time.

JulieB,
I'm with you. My husband sells miniblinds that he paints on ebay. I was on there & found four Wilton books for under $10.00. The only reason I wanted them was two of them were birth year issues in my family. Mine & my 8 yr old daughters. I paid through PayPal. The lady sent me a nasty email stating she thought my check was bad. Hello, I paid w/ credit. Then she took almost three weeks to send them to me. I was icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif . When I got them; there were stickers all over them. Shopping lists inside. To me ruined. I know the were used. get real. I don't like ebay.

I still like Ebay but the deals are becoming hard to find!! You have to know your prices..Shipping is what is killing most people. They may list the item for 99 cents and then charge $20.00 shipping like IHATEFONDANT stated and then when you email them and tell them to "Get Real" They are really nasty and Ignorant!! I still buy regularily but I know the prices now, so many times I pass!!

Some stuff on ebay is a good buy, china is one of them, but you have to know what you're looking for and what it runs other places. I have gotten good deals on cake pans but that seems to be only in lots. I have bought single pans if they're something that I really want and Wilton doesn't make it anymore.
I get really annoyed at some sellers, for example they'll list the 3d train as rare or retired. icon_confused.gif That's just someone trying to take advantage of people who don't know better, the dates on the trains aren't all the same but I have one that I got about 1 1/2 years ago and my mother has one that she bought in 1975 and they are identical.

my hubby did bid on and win a dirtbike with only 60miles on it for my bday two years ago. I love this bike, above and beyond what I expected. unfortunantly I have to sell it now because I don't have enough money to pay for college. being an adult sucks! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_evil.gif

I am not even tempted to look at e-bay anymore ... I like to go to the store and see what I'm getting, know exactly what I'm paying, and determine if it's a good deal. I am also wise to use my AC Moore coupons; I wish I lived closer to an AC Moore. Where do you guys get Michael's coupons? I live equally as far from a Michael's as I do to AC Moore.

Speaking of AC Moore coupons, don't you all wish they'd just make a coupon expire in a month instead of a week? They have them every week anyhow! I print more coupons than I use ... just because they expire too quickly.

One more thing, does Michael's accept AC Moore coupons and vice versa? I know Bed Bath and Beyond accepts Linnens and Things coupons.

Ok- As a seller on ebay I do have to say that there are people that do rip you off with shipping!
Lets say that you have 1 cake pan, lets say, the butterfly pan or the ladybug or the new fish pan. These pans, packed in a Priority mail box, weigh 1 pound! So, the shipping charge should be $4.05 to basically anywhere in the United States (not sure about HI & AK)

Actually, almost all of the wilton character pans with a box weigh 1 pound!

Now, when listing an item on ebay, the majority of items start out at .75 to list the item. (that is with a picture) That is a starting price, the higher you list the price of the item, the higher the charge.

So, we have the listing fee and now we also have a final value fee which I Think is 8% of what the item sells for(i could be wrong, it may not have changed yet)

So, we have those 2 fees and we also have a fee for paypal if the person pays by credit card.

So in this auction, there are usually 3 fees that the seller has to pay.

Anyway, what I am getting at is that yes, when you have a cakepan that weighs 1 pound and you see shipping for $8.00, that is just a ripoff!

I myself do have .10-1.00 tacked on to all shipping charges. That is depending on what the item was. When I list the item, I first weigh it.

This charge is to cover my listing fee which always starts at .75 or more. I always sell my items at cheaper prices than the stores anyway so if I don't tack on that extra .10-1.00, then I am not making much on the item.

But, once again, I do NOT agree with these outragous charges.

Michaels does accept other coupons just like bed bath and beyond!
Also, If you do not have a michaels coupon, you can just give them your zipcode and they will make you sign a paper and they will take off the 40%.

I always get the Joann coupons in the flyers, but no Michael's coupons. When I take my cut out Joann's coupon in there, they have me sign a paper with my zip code too. At first I thought it was really odd, but I'm used to it now.
