Alright, so I take this class with Toba G and she said, "You can't
put the gumpaste or fondant with the BC." She said that
the fat in the bc breaks down the fon or paste. I have a cake
due in sept and it's BC on the cake, but I want to use gumpaste
shells and fondant pearls as the border. Has anyone had a problem
putting BC with either gumpaste or fondant? Help anyone!

Hmm, that really does not make sense to me considering you put a coat of BC on your cake before you cover it in Fondant. BUt then this is Toba talking....

But really, I have never had a problem with BC breaking down my fondant!

Not that I'm an expert, but I use BC and fondant together all the time and never had any problems.

Thanks for the reply kids.
Well, I'm sorry, but it was Toba's assistant
that taught the class that day. I have
another with her next week and will ask her
directly. Didn't have the time in the last class.
I will than post what she meant. I feel confident
with cc's advice any day!

The fact that she said the fat is what did it makes no sense at all. You work with fondant by using shortening to keep it from sticking and to soften it up. It doesn't break it down.

I know, it doesn't make sense. I am a pretty good
listener and I thought I heard her right. THe only thing is that if it was sugar flowers and they were thin, that could break the rose down, you think?
I'll get my chance next week to ask.

Too much shortening will soften up or break down your fondant to the point where it is unworkable and unable to hold it's shape. That's why when you use shortening to keep the fondant from sticking you want to use as little as possible.

This could quite possible be the reason for her telling you that. Ask her to clarify the reason for you.
