Has anyone sold in a Farmer's Market? If so what was your experience with it? What are the legal requirements? Did you provide samples in addition to your goodies? Did you have enough traffic to make your time spent profitable? Did you receive business as a result of your sales there?

It is a lot of work to prepare for the market.
Most require you post your license where it is visible.
Samples are good, very small samples.

If you sell cookies, sell them by the package or dozen, not one at a time

Anything chocolate may melt, some markets get hot

many require you set up a tent-more work-but you can stay out of the direct sun.

I had regular saturday buyers, but very little followup buisiness.

I know up here in Ontario Canada the Health Unit's are "cracking down" on foodstuffs sold in farmer's markets, requiring that they are being produced in inspected and licensed facilities. I would recommend looking in to your local regulations before proceding.

I've been selling between 2 farmers markets for a couple of weeks now. I'm not licensed, but so far no problems. I set up a table and a big umbrella to help keep the goodies in the shade. At the one location, I improved in the 2nd week over the first. I've only sold at the other location once and I did very poorly in sales compared to the other location. But being that these markets are just starting out for the summer, hopefully they'll both pick up in business. If the other one doesn't do much better through July 4th weekend, then I'll probably stop going to that one. Thus far I haven't done any samples.

At the markets near me you have to be fully licensed.

The local farmer's market here in my town you do not have to be licensed but you do have to submit an application with the county health department and let them know where the food is prepared and what you will be selling and so on.

I haven't done one yet as I don't have a table or canopy or anything like that yet but I did look into it and I did plan it out...

I plan on doing a few 8" cakes decorated to sell as a whole, or maybe 6"ers not sure yet.... brownies as a whole batch as well as individuals, cookies as individuals as well as by the dozen, bread by the loaf or sliced in a plastic container much like the grocery store. I also planned on selling bottled water, mainly because it's cheaper to purchase in bulk then bottled soda, and it's healthier for those who don't drink soda but are thursty and for mothers who don't want their kid getting soda lol.

I also had planned on doing some candy... maybe some choco~pops (wilton candymelts) and some solid candies. I planned on doing a sheet cake or two or three lol and cutting it and plating it before the market, plating on paper/styrofoam plates covered in suranwrap with a plastic fork in with the cake, and selling them as individual pieces for maybe $2.00 or so... the whole cakes mentioned above would be $40.~ or so depending on size chosen.

Good luck with your market icon_smile.gif
