Maybe you undercooked it? Or forgot some of the levening ingredient(baking soda or baking powder)?

I think the boling water is to disolve the cocoa powder. Maybe your baking powder or baking soda ingredients were off? ![]()

I don't think it was the boiling water. I use a recipe that calls for boiling water to add to the cocoa and I wouldn't use any other chocolate cake recipe. I agree that it maybe the baking powder.
