I have always used DH and I tried Betty Crocker and it seem to be more moist than the DH. I was wandering what everyones choice of cake mix was. I also tried the store brand for crisco and it was way better than crisco. I found it to not be as dry as the crisco brand. I was wandering what everyone likes to use. Thanks

It is totally personal choice but I always use DH, add a box of instant pudding mix, use milk instead of water and add an extra egg (use same oil as called for).

I only use hi ratio shortening and that works best for me.

Personally, I use Pillsbury cake mixes. DH is my second choice and I NEVER use Betty Crocker. Everytime I used Betty Crocker, the cakes rose beautifully - but then shrunk down to nil. NEVER had Pillsbury or DH do that! So, I opted many years ago to stick with the other two.
As for shortening - I've found that using Walmart's brand just as good as using Crisco. Can't go too cheap on the shortening, tho - there are differences. But I've been using it for years, too, and I find it works just as well as Crisco, but a for a little less $$.
Sometimes it's a matter of trial and error, and finding what works for you and your customers. I've learned new things off of this site-and I've been doing this for 15 years! Shows that you can always learn something new and grow! icon_smile.gif

I always used DH until I had read a bunch of threads that people were having problems with sinking, etc. So I started using BC and PB...I had sinking problems with BC and PB is too moist and I don't like some of their flavors. I switched back to DH and I haven't had any problems yet and I still love the flavors!
I don't think I've ever used anything besides Crisco as far as shortening goes.

I do the exact same as awolf24 except for the pudding. I have never had a problem with DH. I also love the store brand shortening instead of Crisco.

I almost always use DH. Last weekend my white cake with the extender recipe sank for the first time ever. I was so sad, but happy that it was a family cake and not a customer one. I bought Pillsbury White to try this weekend on a practice.

Does anyone know if DH makes a lemon mix? I always wind up buying Pillsbury or BC, or are there good extenders for a white cake to become lemon?

I use Duncan Hines and Pillsbury...... never really tried Betty Crocker. And I use Wal-Mart brand shortening with no problems.

lchristi27 - yes, DH has a lemon cake mix but I can't always find it at the store. I made cupcakes to take to work and people really liked it.

I never use the Pillsbury as I find it too dry. I use either DH, or BC, depending on what flavor I'm looking for (love that BC Milk Chocolate!) and which one is on sale icon_smile.gif
shortening goes, I've tried several different store brands and always come back to Crisco. Around here, I'm having no trouble finding the trans-fat Crisco.

I use Duncan Hines. I find Betty Crocker too moist and I have had problems with sinking. I also find it "flakier" than Duncan Hines when I am frosting it.

Pillsbury for me. If my store happens to run out of a particuliar mix that I am needing, I will drive to another store before I go with DH or Betty Crocker. I am a die-hard Pillsbury fan for sure!

DH makes an awesome lemon cake mix. i get mine at superwalmart. i also add a box of lemon pudding and an extra egg - YUM!!!! i do the pudding/egg thing with all my cakes. and as for shortening, i always liked crisco better, but since they changed stuff up on us (grrr.....) icon_mad.gif i've been using wal-mart brand. it's works fine, but dh and i can taste a difference.

i always use DH for my cake mixes and like most others sub the water for milk and add that extra egg w/ a box of pudding. works the best! BC i find to be a bit to crumbly, the only exception is i used their carrot cake mix once and loved it, i followed the extendor recipe and added pineapple, raisins and nuts. i wish DH had a carrot cake mix and not that spice cake one...i loath spice cake!

as far as shortening goes i use bake right (i think that's how they spell it) it has never let me down, when i get lazy or rushed i buy the crisco bars. that's the only time i use crisco really.

I always us DH with pudding egg and milk. Yesterday for the first time I had trouble. I made cupcakes with the butter flavored mix, added vanilla pudding, milk, butter and 2 tbls of sour cream and when they were done, they flattened right out and the tops stuck to the pan. I've never had that problem before. Anybody know what I did wrong. Should I maybe not have added the sour cream?

Karen

As far as shortening...I use walmarts brand with no problem.

Chiming in for my favorite Pillsbury. Betty Crocker is a backup choice for me, but I don't like the texture or flavor quite as well. I wish the stores around here carried more Pillsbury flavors. My grocery store (a HUGE "HEB Plus" store) for a long time didn't even carry Pillsbury, and now has only white, devil's food, and strawberry.
