i am doing a cake for this weekend. it is going to be the front page of a newspaper with an edible image on it also. i am trying to figure out the best way to get all of the lettering onto the buttercream cake.
i was thinking of doing the larger letters in royal icing, letting them dry, and then placing them on the cake. then the rest i would have to pipe freehand.
anyway, my question is, do you think a FBCT would be a better solution? i have never done one but have been reading up on them. i'm not really sure if the FBCT would work on something like this - with all of the separation space between letters.
on the examples i've seen on this site, a 'coloring book' type of image is used and every shape is filled in with one color or another.
would i just pipe the lettering and then fill in all around with the background color?

thanks in advance for any help icon_smile.gif

You would have to join the letters or do single letters in FBCT. Your idea about royal is probably better. Once you do the letters, turn them over and do it on the back side. It makes them more sturdy.

When i have to do small lettering on a cake, i roll out a piece of fondant and write on that with edible marker and place the slab of fondant on the cake. I don't know how it will work for what you are doing...a newspaper.

thank you for your advice. i think i'll try the royal and then use a toothpick on the buttercream to map out the smaller letters. the text i'll do with wavy little lines.
i'll post the pic when i'm done. this should be interesting icon_smile.gif
