My church is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this October. Now, I have not been formally asked to create a cake for the event, but I would like to. I want to come up with a fabulous design that I can take to the planning committee.

I believe the cake will need to feed at least 225-250 people. I'm thinking a 3-or 4-tiered cake.

Here is our logo:

here's my stab at it.

logo would be done just as 3-D outline in wire (crystals???? beads?) or gumpaste and stand atop the cake --- if gumpaste dusted out in gold for dove and dark blue for loop.

cake: the blue and yellow are my poor attempt to get the blue and gold of the the logo (MS Paint can do only so much!)

luster dusted white pearls cover the division between the colors. (only shown on top layer, but would be on all 4 -- bit lazy on my part!)

Lettering: although I only showed it once in each color on each layer -- with the exception of the top most tier (just too may words) -- it would look great if Love, Joy, Peace done multiple times in multiple sizes and font styles on each of their layers. Envision the lettering matching the gold and blue of the dove (lots and lots of luster!)

the white area atop the bottom 3 tiers would have the congratulatory message. (could double piped -- gold on blue -- or out of fondant cut out letters)

the top under the dove could have the church's name or a large 50 or be left blank.

I don't know how much you want to invest in this, but for a large event like this where you can get some good exposure I would just like to suggest making some of the tiers out of dummies or the entire cake. Then do sheet cakes to cut and serve. This way your masterpiece gets to be on display longer for everyone to ohh and ahh about. Then they can have the sheet cakes and taste how great your work is.

Otherwise I like to do a center piece cake maybe 3 tiers? then the rest of the servings in sheet cakes (doubled up and torted however your tiered cakes are)

just something to think about.

oh and I really like the idea doug gave too. Doing another take on that idea though instead of having all of the divisions of the colors going the same direcrtion maybe have them go opposite directions on everyother tier?

you can also do one large 14" round or larger round with this same design on the front. if you prefer to keep the blue just make the frosting or fondant blue and create the design / insignia on top icon_smile.gif add whatever inscription you desire or none at all icon_smile.gif

I really like the idea of using your cake as the center piece and cutting and serving sheet cakes instead. What a way to show your talent.

Doug, as always you came up with a great design! Love the colors and the pearls in between the colors (even if you were lazy and only put them on the top tier - LOL) look great!

Can't wait to see the finished cake - whatever the design may be. The planning committe should welcome a great looking cake like that!

How about this one which shows the birds soaring upwards leaving a trai of golden swirls in their wake?
Fairly easy to do; the swirls are pastillage painted with lustre, the birds are royal icing run-outs:

Emmascakes-- your example is beautiful! I like the idea of showing off your talent with dummy cakes then serving sheet cakes. You have to remember, you may not be the one cutting and serving. It is easier for those who will be serving to work with sheet cakes, especially if they are precut. The church logo is simple enough to replicate in RI. I think I would make 250-300 to be placed on each serving from the sheet cakes.

Good news - I got the go-ahead to do the cake. YEA!!!!! I'm going to go with something based on Doug's idea. Thank you so very much icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif.

It's not due until October, so you'll have to wait till then for pictures.
