I made a practice cake last night. No decorating, just baked the cake, wrapped it, and put it in the fridge. Was gonna make icing tonight, and decorate tomorrow night since I am off Thursday and don't have to get up early for work.
While at work I realized that Friday is the birthday of a girl that I work with. We are both off Thursday & Friday, so I figure it has to be done tonight. I considered using the one in the fridge, but I want to use that to try a FBCT. (It is the Wilton Crazy Daisy). So I decide to make her something else.
So I am making the icing, the first part goes in the fridge to get cold, I am moving things around to make room, and I notice the cake looks strange. On closer look, I AM MISSING ONE WHOLE PETAL OFF THE CAKE. ![]()
Apparently my 9 year stopped at the house "for just a minute" while I was at work and pulled a hunk off, and very neatly rewrapped the plastic, doesn't even look like it was touched.
Glad I wasn't planning on using that one.
It takes a little while for all the kids in our homes to understand that cake stuff is "OFF LIMITS".
Hopefully he learned his lesson and I am sure whatever the punishment it was worth a hunk of Mom's delicious cake!
Well I guess I really hadn't made that clear since I just started trying to do this. It will be clear from now on though!
Normally anything in the house (foodwise) isn't off-limits. But now he knows not to touch the cake until it's been "OK'd"
Too funny!!! I love the part about wrapping it back up so neatly!! Does he otherwise leave his shoes in the middle of the floor? That would make it even better. Kids, gotta love em!!
Cindy
Yeah, pretty much everything, believe me not just his shoes.
I should have had my camera though, the look on his face when I asked him about made it worth it. (Almost).
Cute story.
...On his behalf mom, he was neat about it. Not only did he neatly wrap it back up, but there wasn't a crumb trail from the fridge to the door.
Plus if his friends were around at least he didn't offer them a chunck. ![]()
Okay, okay, I'm a soft touch.
So with that in mind maybe you could throw a little something extra in the oven for the kiddos. ![]()
By the way mom_of2boys, Welcome. ![]()

My teenage+ kids definitely know not to touch any cakes. Occasionally there is a cake that they can have. Either because I made a mistake I couldn't fix or because I was just in the mood to make a treat for the kids and their friends. I stand up a note by it that says "Yes, this is for you!"
Luckily my kids never did anything like this...HOWEVER...it's my HUSBAND I have to worry about! I have to leave little "post it" notes all over the place saying "DO NOT EAT OR TOUCH THE CAKES!"...lol...
4 kids...he's SO bad, I not only have to leave the post it notes on the CAKES, but the butter cream icing TOO! He's been known to stick his finger in and get a big old glob to eat plain!...ugh, he's SUCH a child!...lol
Sorry about your cake, i guess it happens to us all! On my last night of the Wilton 1 class a girl showed up with a store bought cake and informed us that her family had eaten her WHOLE cake the night before that she planned to bring it to class the next night!
I have big brothers and a boy friend who are cake lovers so I also go with the post-it note method!! They are finally getting the hang of things!
Michie21.....it's funny you say that because when I took Wilton Course 1 a girl came in with her cake with a slice (more like a big wedge) taken from it and said her Dh took it without asking. She decorated it just like it was. It was hilarious......she was a good sport though.....If it were me it would have been way more dramatic.
As for mom_of2boyz.....I always make some extra cupcakes for the family so that noone feels shafted. I even let my girls (I have 4 of them) decorate them while I work on the cake.
my son Kody is a cakezilla. I have come into the kitchen many a time to find a cake that has been torn to bits....even if I leave the cake scraps next to the cooling cake he will dive in....so now I bake after bedtime, or shove done cakes into the microwave and cooled oven so he can't see them if I have to leave the kitchen.
OK, now I am REALLY confused!!!
When I first posted this, the title read..
AAKK!!! That's it.
NOW, my 9yo ate it is in the title also.
WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?

With five kids the ages of yours (Katie is 99?), I don't see how you could do anything at all concerning cakes while they are awake!

Katie was born in 99, Kam in 01, etc etc.....they are in descending order 7, 5, 4, 3, and 1.
Wow, you're busy! I still don't see how you have time to do cakes!
Well my son is only 2. It's my husband that I have to prepare for. I learned that whenever I make a cake for someone I have to make one w/ icing (not decorated) for my husband so he can be HAPPY.
My son Aidan is 5 and has autism. He's an awesome kid, but I digress...
Just a little bit ago, he comes up to me while I am kneading color into fondant. He points and says "piece?" (Yes, he likes to eat fondant.)
I pull off a sliver and hand it to him. He looks at it, crinkles his nose, and says "BIG PIECE?".
He never gets into my cake stuff. He actually points and says "wedding cake, mommy" and lets me work.

Well, if you look in my gallery, you will notice how few I have actually done. It takes me a long time to do them when I do, I don't work fast at all. My kids get a lot of "Mommy's Busy" when I am working (if they are up) Otherwise it is a lot of late nights and no sleep for me. =-) I love doing it though. I figure it won't be long until they are old enough that they won't want need my attention as much, so I can get more baking time in then.
the first cake i did for a baby shower my son, who is now 20 months, but this was in april, anyway, I had just finished decorating it and he walked by the table and took out the whole corner...i filled it in with icing..so one whole piece was icing only...I was horrified, and at least when I say no he stops so i can get him out of the kitchen.
