Okay, I have had a lot of fun working with MMF and making cutouts, but when it comes to anything larger than a small shaped cutter, I can't get the fondant to roll out big enough. I would really like to do ribbon, like around the bottom of the cake, or stripes, but I can't roll out a large enough piece of fondant to cut long straight lines out of. What am I doing wrong???? icon_cry.gif

Is it too dry? too sticky? Not sure why it won't roll out. However, if you just want to cut long ribbon pieces, shape the fondant into a long snake shape first. the it will flatten and lengthen easily.

It's either too dry or too sticky...First it sticks to the rolling pin, then I add cornstarch, and it's too dry and it tears instead of rolling out.

Use a small amount of crisco smeared on your counter to roll it out. It won't stick, and won't dry out. I usually roll, then lift and turn it over and then roll again.

Yep, I do the crisco too, smeared on the counter top or over a large piece of vynil. I also filled a knee-high "stalking type" with half powdered sugar and half cornstarch, so I puff a little bit on top of the crisco, as I found that crisco alone will make my fondant too greasy and powder alone will dry it out. Also make sure you have enough fondant to roll a large long piece for ribbon. The puff thing works great!! I have to thank my wilton instructor of that one! Hope this helps!

Similar question, I've been wondering how you get a more perfect circle when rolling out MMF, or anything for that matter. I start with a nice round ball and always end up with a rectangle.

Any tips to keep the dough or MMF in a circle?

It takes practice, but if you pick it up and turn it while it is still large, it will help shaping the round. At some point it will be too large, but it should give you a good start.

Wow! I was playing with MMF last night, and the crisco on the counter did the trick! I still need practice, but I can definitely see it working for me after a few more tries. Thanks so much everyone for the advice. I think there's hope for a future with me and MMF!!! icon_biggrin.gif
