How is everyone doing the cakes with the names? They look like cursive writing and stand up on the cake? I've seen them on 2 tier cake and it's usually sitting on top of the bottom tier. Maybe made out of gumpaste or something? I don't know how to attach a pic. TIA!

I would think gumpaste would work-- I've seen it done with fondant too--

So, do I use a clay gun? Is there a tool for this?

I've rolled fondant into ropes by hand. I've only done this a couple of times and the first time the name cracked during delivery but I was able to piece it together. The second time I made each letter individually.

Lenette, definitely check out Mary-ann's pics - she has a knack for those letters!

I have one that I made in my pics that I rolled by hand. It came out kind of big but they liked it like that. I used fondant. I just recently purchased a play-doh fun factory on clerance at wal-mart for $4. I haven't tried it out though but I read somewhere on here that it works.

if you have a look at my pics, my daughters first birthday cake, i made her name from gum paste using a makins brand clay gun it comes with twenty different ends and it is fantastic to use, so much easier and looks better than rolling by hand.

Cyndi1207: With your "ALEXA" name, what did you roll the MMF in to get it to sparkle like that? I really like that look!
