I am making a chocolate birthday cake for my mom this weekend. For the filling I wanted to use Nutella. Would you suggest using it straight, mixed with buttercream or mixed with premade tub frosting(like betty crocker, duncan hines)? also, would it be ok to decorate the cake with plain buttercream or should I also use a chocolate type frosting? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks.
I havent used nutella before, but I have heard of a lot of people using it just plain, but I am sure you could mix it with some buttercream if you wanted. Regular or chocolate buttercream would be fine with chocolate cake. Just depends on the flavor and the look you are going for.
I usually mix it with buttercream. You can do both, but mixing it with buttercream will give it a nice, fluffy texture, and the nutella taste really comes through.
ALONE!!! I flavored my chocolate cake with
hazelnut extract and added the nutella alone
and the cake was GONE!! Lots and Lots of compliments. I flavored the swiss meringue with
hazelnut and chocolate flavor. YUMMY!
I would use it plain. Then a choc butter cream frosting. You can also dip hazelnuts in chocolate to decorate the cake..Just to give a hint of what's inside.
I would use it straight out of the jar.
skip cake...straight to mouth!!!
yeah what doug said DROOL- tell the cake to take a hike and insert finger (or spoon if you must use decorum) into jar and wish happy birthday LOL
I've used it straight. covered with a layer of buttercream flavored with nutella in between the layers. Covered with vanilla buttercream. Rave reviews. But any way you use it, will be great.
I agree with byinvitation that you should include some hazelnuts on top in case of allergies.
OH MY!!! I'm drooling. That sounds so good. I'm going to have to try that. I guess it would depend on your personal taste... Hmmm....now me... I would go with the chocolate icing and the nutella. I'm definately going to have to try that! YUM!!!
Once I mixed it with chocolate frosting to fill and cover a chocolate Ferrero Rocher cake. It was absolutely delicious. Not a slice was left =)

Chocolate. Hazelnut. Life doesn't get much better than that!

I'm with Doug on this one, too. Actually, I only buy it about once a year because it only lasts a week or so. I made my yearly purchase the last time I was at the grocery store and I'll probably finish it off when I get home from work. MMMMMMM!
just a thought - but I like to fold it into whipped cream...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....for the filling......mmmmmmm....okay - I NEED to bake one NOW.....mmmmmmm
There's a hazelnut cake recipe in the Whimsicle Bakehouse book that's wonderful with the Nutella filling
