i did 2 mini mmf cakes before and lastnight i wanted to do my doll cake (in photos) in fondant but had a problem rolling my fondant out that big. 1st i rolled it out on the counter but when i tried to pick it up it ripped. then i rolled it out on wax paper (had to use 2 pieces overlapping each other, hubby's idea btw) so that i can just flip it over on the cake and peel off the paper but as i was trying to peel off the wax paper the mmf ripped at the seam where the 2 pieces of wax paper were joined. the mmf was not sticky but i was using crisco and it was a little greasy and soft. i dont know if it was just rolled too thin and thats why i was having a problem or if it was because it was greasy and soft. i was also thinking that maybe i need something else to roll it out on. well after failing at putting on the mmf i just decided to do the cake in frosting that i had already. the mmf was ruined by the frosting getting stuck to it when i tried to put it on the cake so i didnt have enough left to try again.

my questions are:

how do you guys do it?
how do you roll out your fondant that big?
how thick is it supposed to be?
what can i get to roll it out on that is not too expensive since this is just a hobby for me and i wont be using fondant that much.

any other tips would be really helpful

Thank you.

Your doll cake turned out beautiful, despite the fondant mishap! I would guess it was rolled out too thin....don't give up - MMF takes some practice!
I always roll MMF out on my kitchen table (which I make sure is completely sanitized first!). I remember reading somebody else's suggestion to buy a heavy-duty vinyl shower curtain to put over your table for this purpose. I wouldn't roll out the MMF any thinner than 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick. Good luck!

I always roll mine out then wrap it around my rolling pin, pick it up, then lay it on the cake. Depending on the size, this can get pretty heavy and a little tricky to center it. Oh, I roll mine out on my tupperware mat, but I have read in the forums that people go to Walmart and buy vinyl or acetate in the fabric section for $2 a yard. As for how thin, I never measure, but I seem to remember reading from Colette that she rolls hers 1/4" thick.
Good luck.
