I have done a search on shipping cakes and have a pretty good idea how to mail the cake. But what my question is, I want to make a german chocolate icing from scratch and mail it along with the chocolate pound cake. Do I go ahead and put it on the cake? or, Put it in a seperate container for them to put on the cake themselves? If so, Is this icing safe enough to be on route for a day or 2?
Thanks!

It is a cooked icing, and should be OK to travel. I would definitely pack it separate fo adding at the destination. Otherwise, they will open the package to a big sticky mess.
