I have designed a cake including red fondant ribbon around the base of each square tier, which I want to paint with some luster dust. My question: should I paint it before putting it on the cake, or after it is in place?

Thanks so much for your guidance!!!

I would paint it after it's on the cake. The problem you would run into is the fondant drying out before you get a chance to put it on the cake and having cracks in the ribbon. Use vodka or lemon juice. I like vodka better and just paint it once it's on the cake

I agree with xandra83, paint it after. You could also use vanilla.
