3-D Strawberry- Will This Work Or Will It Crash?
Decorating By elvis Updated 23 Jun 2007 , 6:30am by Ariginal
Okay, I have a lady who REALLY wants a big 3-D strawberry (straight up and down) for daughter's strawberry shortcake party. I couldn't find one in galleries...
I was thinking of trying to make my batter more dense with pudding--and then bake in a wonder mold pan. Then take it out, flip it upside down so the smaller end is on the bottom...shave some off the bottom so won't be SO wobbly, and then top with a soccer ball pan for rounded top. Hope this makes sense...
What do you think? Will it hold? I will be using Dr.'d mix for this one and frosting with buttercream.
unless you build an internal armature (support) like you see the chefs on the cake challenges do (like mkie, bronwin, duff, etc.)
gravity WILL win and over it will topple.
and since I doubt you are charging enough to cover those additional supplies, that strawberry will have to be done some other way.
one option would be leily's suggestion of on it's side.
another would be flat but on a shaped board that about 1 inch narrower than the cake so you can gently round the sides to make it look more 3-D AND have displayed on a slant buy resting on a large foam wedge.
Thanks for your replies everbody-- I think I'll have to think of a different way to do this---maybe cut so much off of the bottom of the "berry" that it only tapers in slightly. Either that, or let the strawberry be upside down, so that the big end is on the bottom....hmmmm....
First off, I have to tell you that I've never made a cake before.
But the playdough lover
inside me wants to give this suggestion..
Why not make a strawberry patch.. a larger strawberry in the middle - on it's side, with leaves and smaller strawberries and strawberry blossoms, surrounding..
Just a thought.
An upside down strawberry just make me think of a big tongue
LOL!
HTH!
Definitely on its side or with an internal stand. An internal stand wouldn't be too hard, just a 1" dowel in the center of a wooden board with a smaller circular wooden board screwed to the top of that. That could hold the main part of the strawberry, then dowel and cardboard the layers. You could use rice krispie treats for the bottom part of the strawberry.
Customers do expect miracles at times don't they! haha.

I know this is an apple, (you all thought I lost my marbles! LOL), but wouldn't the same concept work for a strawberry?!!!!
This one is a cute one...even though its not standing up!

Found one more, she even tells in the comments how she made it...also, search strawberry shortcake in the galleries, that's where these are coming from. Good Luck!!!!!

If you look in my photos, (I don't know how to do the attachment here), I have done a strawberry using the wonder mold and did it upside down, but quite honestly, I think it would have looked better and more realistic if I had lain it on it's side.
This cake is a combination of partial Wonder Mold, rounds and cake baked in a Pyrex bowl. I stacked it like a tiered cake, then drove several sharpened dowels all the way through the cake and into the board. It survived a brief car ride.

Thank you so much for your replies! Kita girl, thanks for advice on stand---heidisuesmom, that last picture is exactly what I would love to do! Thanks so much for showing me-- I did a search for "strawberry" and I guess should have searched "s.shortcake"...
DianeLM, that's the perfect shape too-- thanks everyone for your help!
Here is one that I had for my daughters b-day party yesterday.
I can't really give you instructions on how to shape it because It was given to me shaped all I had to do was decorate it. It was a gift from the bakery I worked at for my externship. Sorry I couldn't be much help but it will give you an idea of how the cake will look.
Thanks
Jackie

Wow i totally came by this hread by accident and was attracted to it straight away as i too have been asked to do the same thing a 3D strawberry for the strawberry shortcake house cake.. and i was going to use a 71/2" round tin and a bowl to bake the cake and then stack the bowl on top of the round cake and slightly taper it but also use the dowels for supporting it... and i hoping mine will work eheheh as mine got to travel about 3 hours away or so.. cant wait to see yours and i will be sure to post mine when i have done it. good luck to you..
