I have a couple that want a groom's cake and he requested the tuxedo looking cake. I know from talking to them they don't particularly like fondant and so far that's the only way that I've seen it made. Do any of you have suggestions about how it could possibly be made out of buttercream? I told him that it could be possible but the look probablly wouldn't be as crisp and sharp as the fondant one. What do you guys think? Thanks for the help.

I think you could do it with BC, you're right though it may not be a crisp as with fondant, but you could outline each area....maybe doing the white first, give it time to crust, then try smoothing it with a Viva papertowel, then do the chocolate part, and again, carefully try and smooth it, add the buttons and bow tie with a round tip......I think you could make it work!

Cindy, thanks for the ideas and encouragement. Thank goodness the wedding isn't until September so I have a little time to play around with it.

What about covering the cake in ganache and then to make the lapel bowtie and button you could use candy clay. You could also use candy clay for the shirt portion too.

cakeconfections, thats a great idea! I haven't worked with candy clay yet, how do you make it or where can you find it? How does it taste?
Thanks again

Ok... here's a picture I found of a buttercream tux cake. It has fondant accents, but is iced in buttercream. I think it's really great!

ok... now that I look at it closer, maybe it's fondant icon_redface.gif but it could be done in BC!

That is a nice looking tux cake! If you did the upside down method of icing, wouldn't it have that crisp look to it and then add the tux part using the candy clay?

keep in mind that chocolate fondant tastes much better than white fondant too. The chocolate Satin Ice is great!

Thanks for all the ideas, I really like the 2 tiered tux cake, it looks so sophisticated. I'll make sure to forward it on to the couple and see what they think. I think that it could be done in buttercream that way, the only hard thing is making the accents. Thanks again
