I got these instructions from cakeobsessions (I think). This is what she wrote:
I just bake three cakes in my 2" pans and then torte each one. I stack five layers and leave one for the top. I put it on a cardboard base and then cover in fondant (including the edge of the cardboard to "hide" it). Put a couple of dowels that stand taller than the base cake to prop up the lid however high you want it. Then insert the tissue. My mistake on my first one was that I hadn't done any of my tissue before hand so it was to limp to stand and actually look like tissue. So I am going to do the tissue probably the day before.
Hi everyone!
I have an order for a silver gift box cake next weekend and could use some pointers on how to do the top. If anyone has anything they can share I would greatly appreciate it!!

I did not use cake for my lid. It was made out of gumpaste. I used cornstarch to dust the inverted bottom of The cake pan. Then I rolled my gumpaste out and covered my cake pan with it. I trimmed the sides, placed my bow on The lid and let it dry. ( It was a last minute thing so it was not completely dry when I was ready to go in the morning). I place a cake board underneath the lid and it was supported byt chopsticks so that it looked like the box was slighty open.
For the tissue, I used fondant and I rolled it out really thing and used my tapered spatula to cut in to squares. Lifted it off my rolling mat and allowed it to drape naturally over the top of the cake. I used paper towel to support the fondant in some places until it dried enough to stay up on it's own.
If it's not to late here is instructions you can look at:
