It works best on fondant. You apply the impression before the fondant dries on the surface. Then you can add accents or other decorations.

You can use a ruler or sometimes the back of a knife to deepen the impressions.

You can use it on buttercream, too. Just let the buttercream crust before gently pressing the mat onto the icing.

I have a question too icon_biggrin.gif Do you use the impression mat on the fondant before it goes on the cake or after? Thanks!

I am doing the cake in buttercream, now do I have to put anything on the mat before I gently press on the cake? Thanks

You don't need to put anything on the mat if the icing is crusted first.

Mrsscurry........................you can see the impression matts at www.cakesbysam.com or earlenescakes.com just go to impression matts, they leave a design on the cake or fondant. Go to my photo and look at the Jackies Prince has come and you can see the cobblestone one used on fondant to make a walkway. HTH

I prefer using the mat on fondant strips that go on the side of the cake, as it leaves a better impression than when the fondant is already on the cake. I just let it crust for a few minutes, roll it up, then apply to the side of the cake. This lessens distortion.
