Benadryl used to make me wired. Take two and I'd be up all night.

Well, recently I broke out in a rash due to a new skin cream I was trying and I took two Benadryl and it made me "drunk" and knocked me out.

Today I woke up with really bad allergies (coughing, stuffy nose, etc) and the decongestant I took wasn't working, so I took ONE just ONE and I'm already feeling tipsy. I'm having a hard time even typing this.

I'm not gonna get a blessed thing done today.

Does Benadryl have this affect on any of y'all?

sometimes; i call it zoned out or such lol. i take zyrtec for my allergies which still isn't enough sometimes.. i have to make sure to take it around the same time every day or a variant on this schedule causes me to get tired from it. one time i stopped taking it because that particular insurance was costing me 35$ a month and thats alot of money in our house (hehe) so i went a year w/o it just using cheaper otc stuff- started taking zyrtec again and WOW i was Majorly Zoned for a few days till i got used to it.

There must be something about Benadryl! I'm extremely resistant to medication (When I had surgery, the dr. had me on Valium, Percocet and Morphine all at the same time just to kill the pain) but I CANNOT take Benadryl. It knocks me flat on my patookus and I can plan on sleeping for at least 6 hours.

I can't take even the nondrowsy stuff. icon_lol.gif If I have a cold or some other reason to need a decongestant I have to wait until bedtime and then I still feel funny all the next day. My husband laughs at me because dayquill will knock me on my butt, I'm just glad I don't have allergies.

I take Allegra-D for allergies, and if I take it too close to bedtime, I'm up all night. Pretty much any type of decongestant is like that.

Now, Nyquil or anything like that... I'm knocked out for HOURS.

well, I have a little boy who is the EXACT opposite to the norm for the benadryl reaction.

He had hernia surgery at 22 months (yes, he heriated himself buy trying to move our couch...he's a nut) and we were told to give him a tsp of benadryl to help sooth him and keep him calm during recovery.

HAAAA! That kid came home from the hospital and, no kidding, 7 hrs later was bouncing all over the damn house! We called his Doc to see what the deal was and he says "a small percentage of kids out there my have an adverse reaction or will not be affected by the benadryl at all..." Thats my kid. It made him HYPER!!! And to top it all off...hes got an allergy to the red dyes in foods...makes him all wired like he's on speed!! So we have to buy dye free everything, cant eat red m&m's, skittles, suckers, bubble gum, icing, use cherry cough meds, Ice Pops, EVERYTHING with red dye is out...makes it hard since his favorite movie is Cars and he wants a lightning cake...ugh...

Maybe you have an alergy to red dye too. It either makes him so hyper he runs until he drops, litteraly or it makes him so whacked out that he passes out for hours upon hours.

I can eat anything with red dye in it and it doesn't affect me at all.

The thing that is wierd is that benadryl USED to make me wired and now it's making me uber drowsy. It's strange for it to change all of a sudden like that and since it was such a different reaction to the one I used to have, I was wondering if it was normal.

I have a prescription allergy medicine, but I'm not supposed to take it in conjunction w/ the prescription decongestant I took, which is why I took the benadryl instead (just for the anti-histamine).

Oh, well. It didn't really help all that much anyway. It started to wear off after about 2 hours and I'm coughing again. I think I'm just gonna go to the Dr tomorrow and see if I can get some anti-biotics.

Benadryl is the "sleepy drug" in medications such as Tylenol PM and other sleep aids. It is also used as a safe, mild sedative for pregnant women and children.

My mom got a 50 ml bolus of Benadryl during one of her chemo sessions, and she was flat out stoned out of her mind. We had to shut the door because she was cracking up laughing like an insane person and I was laughing my ass off at her...quite unusual sounds in the chemo section of a cancer hospital.

I've never seen anyone react to Benadryl like my mom did. It was hilarious!! We laugh about that to this day! icon_lol.gif

My 15 year old daughter has been on Benadryl and other prescription antihistamines for so long that it doesn't make her sleepy at all.

prterrell ... I am the exact same way!!!! Benadryl used to make me super jittery, wired, restless legs, and I would feel like my heart was going to jump out of my chest!!! But recently, it has had the exact opposite effect on me. It makes me feel drunk, just like you said!!! dunce.gif It knocks me out. Even if I take it at bedtime and get a full night's sleep, I still wake up with a Benadryl "hangover". I don't get it, either. Just wanted to let you know that I've had the same strange reaction change occur!!! icon_confused.gif

Benedryl Non-drowsy knocks me out and causes my legs and arms to get all jittery feeling. If my allergies are bothering me I will take an alavert, they dissolve on my tongue and work quite well.
