I haven't tried the straws (yet), but I use floral spikes filled with gumpaste and the wires inserted into that and then the spike in the cake and have traveled with it with no problems. I guess it depends on what you have on the wires though. If they are small, it should not be an issue, but for me I had a couple of cakes with image plaques attached to the wires and did not travel with those in the cake.

I traveled with this cake. All I did was stick the wire into the cake. That's it. The only problem I had with it was the yellow ball on top kept going boing boing boing until it fell off. Hmmmmm I just remembered I need to look for it. It's somewhere in my car! LOL

I didn't think you could put wire in a cake.

I have just the other day. I used a bubble tea straw inserted in the middle of the cake. The wires I bought from AC Moore and were already pre-wrapped with florist tape. I'm not sure what gauge they were though. I inserted the wires the night before, took them off, wrapped then in plastic, taped on top of the cake box and reinserted when I got to work. I was afraid the balls would fall on the cake while it was going boing boing boing icon_lol.gif BTW, I took the bus and the train so that explains why I took them out icon_biggrin.gif Here's the cake:

I used fondant and added gumtex to it because I had no gumpaste at that time. I would have preferred a 50/50 combo of fondant/gumpaste. I attached the balls using water. I made a small loop (looks like an "e") at the end of the wire, wet it and then attached the balls. HTH.

What kind of wire, what do I ask for when I go to buy it?

I second the floral spike - I inserted straight fondant into the center of mine then inserted my decorations and had no problems.

For the cake I did this last weekend I actually used 20 guage jewelry wire. It was on a spool in the jewelry making aisle at Hobby Lobby. I wanted silver and couldn't find silver floral wire. I don't know if it makes a difference but I was spiraling the wire for my butterflies so having the wire on a spool was not a problem for me as opposed to floral wire which is straight.

Go to the floral section of AC Moore. They have pre-packed floral wires in white and green. I think I got the 20 gauge wire. HTH.
