Hi everyone!
I was just wondering what the best way is to color fondant black. I have to make a playstation cake and I am very nervous about getting the fondant black.
Is it the same concept as coloring buttercream black (just keep adding color until it turns charcoal and let it darken overnight)?
I have only had to use black fondant for figures before, so I just bought the pre-colored Wilton packs, but I really don't want to spend all that money and have it taste gross!
I do not have an airbrush, but what about those wilton spray cans? Would that work?
I appreciate any input.
Thanks in advance,
Val.
Best way to get black is to start with chocolate (or brown) then start adding your black...much easier to start with a dark color than white.
For me, I have started buying the really dark colors. I make the light ones myself and buy red, black and chocolate Satinice.![]()

Ditto. For the dark colors, you have to add so much color that the fondant gets really sticky.

This is what I do as well - use SatinIce for the dark colored fondant.
If ordering online is an option for you, you can buy Satin Ice online (lots of color options, including black & red) for a lot cheaper than you can get gross Wilton buying it in the "people color" pack.
Wish I could help you out with a website - I thought I had it bookmarked but I don't.
I had a black and white wedding cake this past weekend, and since my wholesaler didn't have any black Satin Ice in stock (5 pounds for 15 bucks) and the local cake shops sell it for double that, I made my own, starting with white Satin Ice. It took alot of Americolor Super Black, but it definitely was black...and sticky. I had to add tylose to give it some body. It was easy enough to do, and it worked just fine.
After the wedding cake was delivered, the black that stained the palms of my hands faded to violet with a few handwashings, which was deeply embedded in the lines in my palms. It looked like my palms had some wicked bruising going on! LOL
The Ultimate baker sells it...
