Can you use this to smooth icing that is 50/50 butter/shortening or is there a certain ratio that the butter cream has to be...for the crusting?

Thanks,

I tend to use a 50/50 recipe and have no difficulty with the Viva towels. As long as your buttercream crusts you should be fine. Have you used the Viva towles yet? They are awesome! I had my parents bring me a roll from Florida as I have not been able to find any here. Let me tell you they are worth their weight in gold!

I just recently found the plain Vivas here at my Walmart in Carrollton, they are great aren't they?

The patterned ones are good, but it is nice to have it be nice and plain! I only bought one roll, now I'm thinking I should have gotten more while they are available! Oh, well, back to Walmart... Janice

As long as use a crusting type of icing and allow it to sit for about 10-15 minutes before you try to smooth it, it should work for you ... I don't know what I'd do w/o my Viva paper towels !! I smooth most all my cakes with them .. they are great icon_smile.gif

I read on here once that someone uses fabric like a fine weave tulle, or maybe organza type material to get a smoothe effect. I haven't tried that myself but I would like to, that way the fabric can be washed and reused. Anyone else out there that has tried this? Does it work?

Kate, you need a fabric with as little texture as possible! I used the tulle to give a football some texture to look more like leather, so it isn't really smooth. I've also saved a bag those tomatoes on the vine come in, that is a more open diamond shape, might come in handy some time! Janice

I would imagine the vine-ripened bag with the diamond design would be perfect for a "ham cake".

Years ago, when I took my first decorating classes, I was taught to use a rolled up (CLEAN) washcloth on crusted buttercream. I've also tried the paper towel and waxed paper methods of smoothing. don't care for the waxed paper though.
