I am in the process of making buttercream icing for a fbct. Can I make the buttercream using the Wilton recipe but just substitute the cup of shortening for butter? My mixer isn't that large so I can't do a double batch and I already have the cup of butter in my mixer.....yes that will teach me not to start before reading my recipe!!!

yes you can, it doesn't make a difference if it is butter, margarine, or crisco in my opinion. Use what you like the taste of best.

Well, if it's already in the mixer, then you've already resolved the problem by now. All butter tastes good; but it won't be pure white (as you probably know by now.)

shouldn't be a prob might actually taste better. crisco n butter are interchangeable cept for the taste but margerine is a dif dealeo all together as it has more water in it than the other two.

Thanks everyone, I went with it and it tastes delicious although I don't think I will ice the cake with it as it seems to break down very quickly and I am not sure if it will crust enough for me to smooth it. I might use it for the filling though because it tastes so good!
Thanks again!
