My cat Roo has been trying to use the toilets in our house (only been here 2 months) as her personal drinking vessel. She never did this at our old house. The biggest diff in the water is we are now on well water but we have a whole house filter which has improved the taste of the water greatly. SO I'm trying to figure out why she's doing this and how to stop it. I use a 2 liter automatic watering bowl for her and my other cat. I've used this bowl for years now with no problem. This morning I experimented and put down a bowl from the twice filtered water in the fridge. She drank it quickly. Then I put down a bowl from the kitchen sink (filtered the same as the sink in the laundry room i've used to fill her other bowl) and she drank that quickly.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem is unless the faucet in the laundry room has some sediment clogging somewhere and is tainting the taste of the water more.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks,
Dia

My cat does the same thing!!! It has been suggested that it is because the bowl water is extra cold. I don't know it that's true or not. We just have to keep the toilet seat down and never use automatic bowl cleaners. HTH

My cats are always drinking out of the toilet but then again they lick their own tapedshut.giftapedshut.gif . I can give them water and 2 minutes later will find them in the toilet. icon_confused.gif With kids in the house the lid is never down and since I have boys I'm lucky if anything is down so I just ignore it.

hehe.. yeah I would ignore it too if she had been doing it at the old house or I could attribute it to something non-negative. I'm just worried that she now has picked up this "quirk" because something is wrong. I could see if she did it from time to time, but as soon as I let them out of the rec room in the morining, down the hall she goes to the bathroom. She's been shedding like gangbusters as well.

have you tired running the water in laundry for a minute or two to flush the line before filling?

shedding ...could that be stress related...not used to new home, etc.

territorial issues???

I would attribute the shedding to stress perhaps because DH and I were gone for a week and there was a crew in the house refinishing the wood floors while we were gone.

The faucet has been flushed a lot already b/c I use that sink to rinse off gardening tools, paint brushes, etc.

Maybe I'll chalk it up to weird cat behavior or maybe b/c she likes colder water now.

I would put it down to a change in her enviroment.

True story: We had a cat we named Moses (someone abandoned her in a basket)..... she was a very loving cat until......... Mack, Morse, and Mistletoe came to live with us. My mother used to have 2 vodka gimlets everyday, but she never quite made it through the second one before falling asleep. So anyway, one day Moses was hiding behind a chair and attacking ankles of anyone passing by her, and this became almost a daily thing. Normally, she was prim and pristine, thinking she was the queen of all kitties, but then she started her little game.... anyway, after about two weeks of digging claws out of our ankles, my brother announced that he had discovered what was happening with the cat...... he had gone into the livingroom to get Mom's glass and he found Moses lapping up the vodka gimlet! The cat was drunk! (Poor thing... I could just imagine her hangover!)..... she never drank from Mom's glass before the three other cats came home, but I guess the addition of three other attention stealing cats just got to her. Oh, we made a point of going to gather Mom's glass when she fell asleep. Moses went back to being the queen and we stopped having to bandaging ankles!

I thought this was just something animals do.

What if the cat never paid much attention to the old toilet? Maybe they're exploring the house and "found" the toilet water! LOL!

I used to have a cat, only got rid of him b/c I was pregnant and knew he couldn't handle the jealousy that would overcome him with a baby in the house, that would only eat/drink if they were on the same side all of the time.....like the water always being on the right. Also, he'd eat only out of the center of his bowl. When he could see the bottom of the bowl he'd sit there & meow....one time he did it for 15 min. straight until I moved his food back to the center. He also had to have ice in his water, but he never ventured towards the toilet.

Maybe it's just a phase for your cat, or maybe he knows its wrong & wants to see how far he can push you.

Animals are very honery!! We now have a dog in the house and you know how your kids get loud etc. when someone calls or knock on the door. Our dog will do this.

Oh well, animals!! Sorry I wrote a book! I just think it's so interesting how animals can act!

HAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAHAAaaaaahhhhaaa!

A neurotic cat and a drunk cat!! lolololol icon_surprised.gificon_lol.gificon_eek.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

We recently rescued a "Pixie Bob." She's definitely the smartest cat I've EVER seen or heard of. And, true to her breed, she's obsessed with running water of any type. LOVES to watch the toilet flush, and waits nearby until it's time to do so! icon_twisted.gif

Cats inherently desire fresher water than dogs, with a higher oxygen content. Therefore, it goes to reason that water fresh from any source would naturally be sought out. I'm no expert...I read that somewhere in some cat book! icon_rolleyes.gif

I used to have a cat that was a "sugar-holic!" The vet actually told me after a fainting spell she had once that sugar was lethal to her, and to keep her away from it at all costs. icon_cry.gif

She used to act the way about sugar that a drug addict does to drugs! She'd actually SNIFF anything with sugar in it with her mouth open, and a dazed look on her face. NEVER MIND HOW SHE'D ACT IF SHE GOT SOME OF THE STUFF! icon_confused.gif

Her name was Bandit, and sadly, she's gone now. This new Pixie-Bob is going to keep me running now...sheesh. icon_cry.gif

The cat we used to have would lick on them and actually try to eat pieces of them. We'd come home from work and see where he'd done that and it came back up....wasn't a pretty site!

That is interesting. Very interesting. I thought I had a very strange cat. Maybe thats why I love my cat or cats in general because they are all the time doing weird things & keeping me on my toes. Max does stuff & I just crack up at him. Last night he moved the water bowl so much that 1/2 of the water came out. Now why does he do that? He does it everytime.

I could write a book on my cat.

Hey Monica, I'm glad to know that my one cat isn't the only one to move his water dish and spill the water out. icon_lol.gif Mine used to leave it in front of my son's bedroom door LOL!! icon_lol.gif We had to put their water in a self-filling bowl with a big jug of water filling it to stop him. And one of my other cats likes to chew on plastic - bags, wrapping, whatever. He also likes to sleep in the bathroom sink and loves the smell of bleach. After I mop the floor he rolls around and rubs on it. icon_confused.gif WEIRD!!!!

Then he acts wild the rest of the night. I have made pics of him doing this. Weird icon_confused.gif hua? My cats LOVES carrots. icon_lol.gif

Congratulations Monica on your 1000th post!!! No, my cat doesn't go for carrots, but he does the same thing for green olives!!! He's also a sugar junkie. He once ate the outline on an FBCT while I was getting the rest of the colors together. icon_cry.gif I had to start over and will now work ONLY at my kitchen counter because no cats go up there!! icon_confused.gif

We had to get a heavier water bowl because one of the cats would spill the water and then watch it spread.
My cat likes to eat the styrofoam containers that meat comes in, I have to get it out of the house right away or the garbage gets knocked over. icon_confused.gif The strangest thing about that is that he always gets sick after but still eats it as soon as he can.

I've never heard of this before! However, my cat insisted on drinking from a toy frying pan that I'd gotten when I was really little, and she would only drink from it if it was in the bathroom.

My cat used to drink water fron the toilet tapedshut.gif until I figured out what he wanted, the water fron the toilet was cold. I live in Puerto Rico and it is very hot here so every morning I give him water with ice and he loves it!!
He drinks almost the entire bowl in one moment, anyway my cat has 14 years with me and I will please everything that he likes, he's part of our family and I don't have any kids. I love him very much icon_biggrin.gif

One of my co-workers cats loves to drag stuff up from the basement...no matter how heavy it is!
Bags that have screws, nuts, and bolts in it...anything he can get his little teeth into he will try to pull up the stairs.

My cat Max is obsessed with paper products. Books, magazines, anything I'm reading, he tries to lay on. Even a little piece of note paper, he lays square on it.

What is it about cats that's just so great? LOL
Gotta love them!

Wow Barefoot_Contessa - that is one strong kitty!!!!!! icon_lol.gif Have you considered putting a no slip pad like they use for mixing bowls on the counter underneath it? I've heard they work, but my other cat decided that he HAD to chew on it so I couldn't keep it there. icon_confused.gif

Oh no, I think that would make it more appealling b/c she'd try to see whats under it once she got a wrinkle in the mat.

She's a big girl... If I held her across my body, I can put an arm under her hips and one under her shoulders and still have my arms shoulder width apart. Her mother was a petite and tiny girl so her father must have been huge.
