Can somewhere tell me where I can buy foam wedges to do the crooked cake at? I checked cake dummies and dallas foam but do not see any cake wedges. If not then how do I make them?

Thanks!
Mel

I believe you have to cut them yourself. there is another technique for the whimsy cake that is more stable. The instructions are in the articles section.

I don't know of any suppliers who carry them as yet, but you can bet as they become more and more popular someone is going to start selling them. In the meantime we will have to live with cutting our own.

Thanks....Just wanted to make sure... so when cutting them. just cut out triangle like pieces right? If the tip is too thin would it break in half when doweling?

In reading Colette's "Cakes To Dream On" she says the wedges are cut 1/2" on one side and 2" on the other. Now maybe I am just not getting it, but it seems to me she must be saying she uses a styrofoam round, lets say 6" round by 4" high. Is she saying to just cut 1/2" off one side of that and 2" off the other. Surely she doesn't mean the wedges are only 1/2" tall on one side and 2" tall on the other, does she? Maybe, from the looks of this crooked cake made by Christine (pink Bunny) they don't seem to be very tall. I know the cakes are not carved or slanted, they are all level cakes.

That's how I understood Colette's instructions - 1/2" high on one side and 2" high on the opposite side to make the wedges. The size of the round styrofoam being 1" smaller than the cake tier that sits on top of it.

I emailed Dallas Foam and they can make wedges to these specifications for $1 each. I only asked for 5" and 9" diameter round (to sit below a 6" and 10" round cakes).

That is a great price Miriel, I am going to have to check them out. Thanks for posting.

I had hoped they could custom cut a styrofoam dummy in the shape of the other topsy-turvy kind (the carved cake) but was told they could not do it with a height of 6" on one side. Too bad eh?

They have pre-cut whimsy dummies but the height is only 4" on the high side. Maybe I'll get these and just add the 2" (carved styro) on the top or bottom.

You know Creative Cutters in Canada sells a styrofoam Whimsy set, as well as singles.

Thanks! I'll ask them what the dimensions are on those.
