I recently purchased a small piece of plywood for a cake base and I'm wondering what to cover it with. I've read of other CCer's covering theirs with contact paper...which sounds great, but do you cover it with anything else?! The edges are very sharp and I'm wanting to soften them a bit...
Any suggestions for what to cover it with?
TIA! icon_razz.gif

Probably a good idea to use some sandpaper on the edges. You can paint it, then cover it with contact paper, or butcher paper that can be replaced with each use.

I did a big cake for a church function and used plywood. I had it cut to size at Home Depot and took it home and wrapped it with the Wilton board wrap product. It turned out very good. If your edges are rough though I would use some sandpaper and then cover it. Good Luck.

I have plywood boards that I use for my larger cakes. I cover the tops of them with regular cake boards or foam core and then cover that with my paper.

Do you all get your plywood back or just expect not to therefore including it in the cost of the cake?

I get my board back. I only bake for friends and family members though.

I second JoAnnB on the sandpaper and covering the plywood with contact paper. After that, you can decorate with a ribbon and cover it with fondant to match the cake if you wish.

I cover mine with freezer paper - shiny side out.
Tape it on there with duct tape.
If I want to use prettier paper I just cover it over the freezer paper.
Write on the back of the board "PLEASE RETURN"
When I am through I tear off the paper and it is all clean and ready to be papered again.
But I only make cakes for family and I've been using some of my boards for 10 years.

I, too, only bake for family and friends. But if I happen not to be at the cake eating event, I ask for my board back. I know that is much different than asking for it back from a client. Maybe you could charge an equipment deposit and refund it when they bring the board back.
