I'm making a baseball cake that will be done in MMF. I want to copy and add a signature to the baseball.

My idea is to use a piping gel transfer and then go over the gel with buttercreme or more gel.

Will piping gel "hurt" MMF?

As long as it isn't a big glob, piping gell will not hurt fondant. It will soften slightly where you apply it, but writing is so minimal it shouldn't hurt.

Do you think it would it be better to use a thin buttercreme to transfer the writing then?

I would use gel for the transfer- it wipes off easily if you goof. And then use icing for the piping.
