If I need to freeze layers, I double wrap them in plastic wrap. I have a freezer for cake, so I don't need to worry about odors.

They should be fine for a month or so. If you are using the freezer in your fridge, or if it is frost free, the cake layers won't last long.

I wrap my layers is 2 layer plastic and 2 layers hd foil. I just started freezing cakes, was always afraid to. I have a separate freezer for my cakes.

I use a separate freezer for cakes also but as long as you don't have anything that would cause odors, you should be fine. I wrap in a few layers of saran wrap and I've kept layers frozen for a few weeks but I think they would last at least a month if not longer.
