OK....I'm travelling two states away to do my first wedding cake on my own this weekend! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! icon_surprised.gif I'm so excited and nervous (like I can't actually believe they are going to pay me). What makes it more stressful is the fact that I have to travel 7 hours (with three children 5 and under) with no access to Hobby Lobby......there is Walmart (30 minutes away).

My husband and mother-in-law (oh yea, did I mention I'd be doing this at my in-laws house) will take care of the kids, and my sister-in-law will be available if I need help. AND, my father-in-law just got a new electric wheelchair.....this should be entertaining!

Sorry to ramble.....just need to get it all out and if I say one more thing to my husband, he's going to give me the eye roll! Off I go to finish packing (we leave at dark-thirty tomorrow)!

Good luck! My first wedding cake was in another state, so I decorated at my Grandma's house. You'll do fine after you get used to where things are! Be sure to post a pic when you get back, and drive safe!

I wish you the best of luck! I'm doing my first wedding cake this weekend, Saturday! I'm going to start baking it tomorrow! If I were you (and having family that live 7 hours away and the nearest store is Walmart), I would try to take ALL of my supplies with me, colors, cake boards, etc., as some Walmarts do not carry a good selection of cake-decorating supplies! I know the one by my Mom in Kentucky doesn't, and it's a superstore!
Good luck!

Thanks guys! YES...I am taking EVERYTHING with me! I will even be baking some of the cakes and freezing to take with me (I had to bake the 16 inch b/c it won't fit in my mil's oven, so then I decided to bake a couple of extra layers since they will fit in the sheet box that the 16 in is going in).

cindy: I will be going to McComb, Mississippi! Just another jump and we'd be in Memphis (isn't it about 4 hours away?)!

Yes, definitely take everything that you can even imagine needing with you. a couple years ago I did a wedding cake at home and then had to hop in my car the following day and head for Ca to begin another for the following Sat, and I was so afraid I'd forget something important. Yes, there are many stores in CA but I didn't want to have to figure out where everything was when I got there. I took my trusty KA mixer and a huge tub of supplies. I worked on that cake all week. Never was I soo happy to see the end of a wedding as I was then. Lots of nerves involved in doing weddings. get organized and try and be prepared for anything. Best of luck to you. And don't forget to breathe.

Good Luck.
I'm doing my first wedding cake for the 2nd of September and then taking it 6 hours to the wedding. I can't do it any other way because I'll have a kid in school by then. I already came up with my supply list for my sister to pick up because I don't even have a Walmart less than 2 hours away.
I'm pretty good at making sure I have what I need since I never can just hop in the car to get something.

Good luck Ape, cambo and mbelgard - I'm sure everything will go just great!!! I don't do wedding cakes because of the stress involved so I really give you all a big thumbs up. thumbs_up.gif There are many lucky Brides and Grooms out there because they have such caring decorators for their cakes!!!

I'd be stressed too! Wouldn't want to make a cake with a lot of people around and it would be akward to create a wedding cake outside of your own kitchen. Just be sure to take lots of supplies with you. Will be one less thing to fret about. I'm sure you'll do great. Sometimes when I'm under stress my cakes turn out even better. icon_wink.gif

Wow I feel spoiled I have a Michael's 5 minutes away, Walmart about the same, AC Moore 10 min away and a Joanne Fabrics about 15 min away.

I have to drive that 2 hours to see a 24 hour grocery store, McDonald's, Target and a mall. It's about 3 hours to the closest superwalmart and Michael's. Hobby Lobby and the closest cake store is 4 hours.
When I was 12 my parents moved me from Ft Knox to Minnesota and I couldn't believe we were so far from anything and then I met my husband.
We don't even have 911!! icon_eek.gif It confuses credit card companies and stuff. icon_lol.gif
They're putting a Walmart in about 30 miles from us sometime in the next couple years and I can't wait, then I at least can get paper cones.

You poor thing! I told my husband I'd go anywhere with him as long as there was a walmart within 30 minutes. I may be adding Hobby Lobby within 30 minutes as well! Do you have a Dairy Queen? That's usually a staple of a town.....not even on the map unless you have a DQ! Just kidding! My kids would freak if we didn't have McDonald's (although I could probably fit in my clothes better!)! icon_lol.gif

I don't think my kids have been to a McDonald's in more than a year. icon_eek.gif
The town my husband works in has a DQ but they aren't open all year. The town my kid goes to school in doesn't but they are getting a Taco John's this summer, big news around here.
My husband grew up here so he doesn't think anything about living so far from everything, he's only lived out of the county while he went to school and then he was still in the state. He thinks that Fargo is big. icon_lol.gif
I did just find out a couple hours ago that Minot is supposed to be getting a Hobby Lobby so it'll only be 2 hours away and my in-laws go at least once a month. icon_biggrin.gif

OK....I'm back! I finished on time....delivered it all doweled together (really scary over the Mississippi roads.....my sister-in-law drove under 30 mph the whole way with her emergency flashers on.....someone even passed us, then pulled over and flagged us down to make sure we were ok.....he just rolled his eyes when he found out we were delivering a wedding cake!).

The florist put WAY too many flowers on the cake and the bride was actually worried that she would (the florist was a relative of the groom). The original picture had just roses cascading down the side and although the cascade she did is beautiful, I feel like it competes with the bows on the cake. The mother of the bride did see the cake before the florist added flowers, so I was clear there! AND....the top tier was only a 4 inch....so for one thing, you can barely see it with all the flowers, and two, it was almost totally destroyed when we pulled out the flowers to remove it (I also helped my sister-in-law serve the cake).

All in all it went pretty well....had a little trouble smoothing the bottom tier, but once I got the right utensils (I forgot my fondant roller to use over my viva, so my sister-in-law brought a small brand new foam paint roller), I did just fine with the exception of getting the layers level on top of each other! The cake is all buttercream with fondant pearls and real ribbons and I was kind of excited because the florist and someone at the reception asked if it was fondant!

So, I'm pretty happy! First wedding cake under my belt and no major disasters! icon_biggrin.gif

Beautiful!!! Your cake does look like it is fondant covered. You did a lovely job. The flowers are are pretty too, but I agree that they are a little overpowering. I am so glad things went so smoothly for you.

Your cake is gorgeous! If you can pull off your first like that out of state and in someone else's kitchen, then you should have no problems with almost any other wedding cake! Congrats!

Pretty, pretty cake! I agree on there being to many flowers, but I sure like the way they cascade down the side like that.
