Need recommendations on what beginner books to buy and what to start baking first? I really just plan on doing cakes at the beginning, everything but wedding cakes. I am not that brave yet! icon_lol.gif
What beginner tools do I need? I am starting with nothing
Thanks!!

It is good to start out with a basic cake book. The Cake Bible has detailed baking information, but The Cake Doctor starts with cake mixes and creates delicious cakes. Nick Malgieri has a Cake book, too.

As for equipment, you want at least two professional baking pans, they have straight sides, not slanted. I would start with 2 8" or 9" rounds. Those will work with most basic recipes.

The Well decorated cake book by Toba Garrett is wonderful It gives details to everything.
Turntable is a must. basic tips that I use most often is 1,2,3,4,5,18,21,104 and 352. I have many more but these are the basic that are used the most.

Maybe get some Wilton tips, I think there is a group of tips together for beginners, try Michaels, Hobby Lobby or other craft store for this. Wilton also has a good starter book (it was my first) it is yellow and small, like a booklet. I will see if I can find it for the title. Basic pans, round 8 or 9 inches, some decorating bags, etc. Do some poking around here and there are other great sites as well for info and inspiration. Check into any classes in your area, Wilton or otherwise. Good luck to you and remember, have fun first!! icon_smile.gif

I am just starting out too. Everything I have made has been posted in my photos, so you can see, I have not done much. My recommendation (if you have a Michael's store near you) is to save the 40% coupons (and have your friends save them for you) and you can quickly build up your pan selection and other tools for a lot less money. I have about 4 people sending me coupons so I make several trips for pans the week they are good.

I just started a month ago..and I agree about the 40% off coupons. I have bought a few cake pans, if you are doing to do sheet cakes, maybe some of those. Colors for frosting if you want to do other than white. There are a couple really cheap things like the decoration triangle. Get a couple good spatulas. I also bought some measuring cups as it is important to be accurate with recipes. Welcome to cake decorating and get prepared to be addicted.
