Luster Dusts - Not Fda Approved, But Does Anyone Care?
Decorating By Tscookies Updated 17 Jul 2006 , 7:13am by fearlessbaker
I'm just wondering how everyone feels about using these dusts for paid work even though they're not FDA approved in the USA. And what does that mean ... is it technically illegal for us to use them on products that will be consumed? I see all of the big name cake & cookie decorators using them on their sites (which I'm glad about!). But is there any liability risk if we use them? Should I bring this to my client's attention and then let them decide. I want to use them, but I don't want a liability either. Any advice out there?
Personally I don't care abut the FDA's approval ratings. Sometimes they go over board, however, I put myself aside and let my clients know about the non-approved dusts before I use them and let them decide. I will show them the color and get them to give me a written "OK" to go ahead and use the dusts.
I sure would like to know where I can get ahold of the edible gold that I see on TV.
Anyone know?
I hope this helps.
There are some dusts that are considered "edible", but I can't recall who makes them. Most of the time, the dusts are used on items that are not intended to be eaten, most ofen gumpaste flowers. I wouln't use them on something that was supposed to be consumed.
Items like this are not necessarily unsafe. They are just not used or sold in sufficient quantities to justify the expense that would go into testing them. It's a good idea to have a disclaimer if it makes you and your customers more comfortable.
I know that you can use the powdered food colors the same as petal dust.
Lilie, are you talking about the edible gold leaf sheets? You can get those at The Gold Leaf Company. Sorry, I don't have their number or web address. Also, just search for edible gold leaf and try ebay too.
