Hi, I love to bake, but I do cookies more often than cakes. I don't know how to decorate cakes though, but I really want to learn. Would it be a good idea to take a decorating class at Michaels Arts and Craft store? Would I be able to learn it on my own with just practicing?
You can learn alot by yourself, but something are hard to visualize, which is when classes come in handy. You'll also be able to hear tips and tricks from your instructors. Granted, not all instructors were created equal. Some have done this for years and years and are absolutely unbelievable, others aren't quite as good....It is the luck of the draw kind of thing unless you get get a heads up from someone in your area.
That said I did enjoy the classses, it gave me a good jumping off point even though my instructors weren't always absolutely remarkable.
I have enjoyed taking classes. I just completed course 2 this weekend. My instructor is wonderful - so I think that makes a big difference.
I really enjoyed my classes. I'm taking course 3 and Fondant & Gumpaste starting next week. I have a great teacher. I am also a visual learner. I agree about finding out about the teacher. My sister went to a michaels for her classes had a poor teacher then retook them at JoAnns. I think I would look at the michaels calendar and maybe visit after a class ends and ask someone who attends if they would recommend it.

I would recommend taking the classes. April of last year I took my first wilton class. I had no clue of how to decorate cakes. I took all three courses, I feel in love with cake decorating. I am now teaching the wilton classes. Wilton opened the door for me, and now I have seen that there is a great big world of cake decorating besides just the wilton way. After the classes and getting the basics I went on to teach myself other things and learn as much as I can. Welcome to the world of cake decorating!!!
I took Wiltons 1, 2, & 3 at Michaels with the same instructor in 2005. She is a great WMI. Now I am taking a beginners class with a cake supply store that has classes and doesnt teach the WM. My kids gave me the class for Mothers Day. They also offer advanced CD, GP, fondant, cookie and candy classes. The daughter manages and teaches and the owner, whos retired, will teach if her daughter cant. I have wanted to take their classes since I found cake decorating two years ago.
I look forward to the class each week (it is 2 hrs for 6 wks). I am glad that I took the WM classes because it gave me a start with CD and when I am sitting in class, I understand what the instructor is talking about. I told her that I had already taken classes and wanted to learn a different way and just learn more. I told her that I am going to sign up for the next class even thought this one is not even over with yet. LOL. So whether you do it the Wilton way, self taught, or independent store, enjoy every moment and remember, if you have any questions, Cake Central is here to help you. Good luck and happy decorating!
I made my very first cake last August, a 3 tiered wedding cake for my husband's niece. She asked us a week before the wedding. SHE WAS DESPERATE and we told her no guarantee it would turn out. We had no idea what to do, but went by the seat of our pants. Bought some things and everyone thought it turned out just fine. Loved the cake and decorations. Since then I have become an addict!! I have taken classes 1,2, and the Fondant gum paste class with a wonderful WI. I will be taking class 3 in a couple of weeks. I have learned alot from the classes and alot on my own since then. Good luck with whatever you decide but it is addicting!!
