I really need some help!
Our fellow CC member is very Ill and I would like to send her some cookies or something to make her feel a little better in her time of need.

Her name is MartyJay and I have become pretty close to her thru ebay and she is fairly new to this site. She has not been on in awhile because she has been heavly medicated.
I do not want to tell all of her buisness but she has congestive heart failure and is not doing very well. This has really hit me pretty hard. She has been an inspiration to me and I just want to be able to do something for her. Her Pep talks have changed me in so many ways.

So, I need to know from anyone, how do you send some kind of "treat" in the mail.
I would prefer to send her cookies. But I do not know how to ship them! I am afraid they would break and this heat has been terrible!

Please, I am sorry for telling bad news on such a happy place but I really need help this time.
Any ideas would be great!
Thank you,
Michelle

I've never shipped cookies (or any food for that matter) before, but someone out there may be able to help. If you don't get a response tonight try again tomorrow during the day. I'll say some prayers for MartyJay, good luck!

I would do cookies with a sturdy icing, then wrap each one in an individual cello bag, and tie with a pretty bow. Find a big gift box (like for a robe or sweater, perhaps), then put a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom, a layer of cookies on top of that, another layer of bubble wrap, another layer of cookies, then bubble wrap on top of the final layer of cookies. I would tape that box shut, then put it into a sturdy mailing box, with peanuts or more bubble wrap to ensure that the cookie box doesn't shift inside the outer box. They should be fine, despite the heat.

And I send her well wishes.

pack the cookies in shipping peanuts.... if you go to the UPS store you can also buy the packing pillows to place inside the tin (or box) of cookies to avoid shifting in transite.

icon_surprised.gif Sorry to hear about your friend. She will be in my prayers. As far as cookies go you can use those containers that they sell like at christmas tree shop Doble bag it with plastic inside for each ind cookie. Never done this before sorry hope it helps. Well wishes and don't worry God is busy but he has many Guardian Angels here on Earth, and lt looks like your one of them. thumbs_up.gif

God Bless to you both.

That is really sad to hear, I also am not too sure on the cookies but maybe you can send brownie squares, or fudge, those are a little less brittle. The only other idea is to put the cookies in a tin while still hot and seal them up in an airtight container with lots of cushion. I would lay them flat and make sure there is not a lot of room for them to move and I would send them fast mail to be safe. I might put a layer of small bubble wrap between layers if you want to be over protective. I know it is not a lot of help but maybe I can bump you enough to get someone who has more experience with this.

Send my best wishes to your friend and I hope she gets better.

Thank you guys! I knew you guys could help me!

I will try with bubble wrap and those peanuts but I hope the icing will not melt or anything!

She is in TN and I am in IL so it is not to much of a long trip.

I guess I can just try and see what happens.

I was told she has fluid in her (I am not sure what that means) but I really hope that she will be alright.

Thanks again Everyone!

I have shipped cookies before....I did the no fail with antonias royal.....

I wrapped each one in its own little baggie tied with ribbon then wrapped 6 at a time in bubble wrap.....I lined the box with crumpled paper....then filled with the crinkle colored cardboard stuff....set the cookies in and covered with more crinkle stuff....they shipped beautifully ...and even here in Texas they did fine as far as the heat.

I was sure to use a box that fit this exatly I was afraid a box too big would move the cookies around too much.

Hope this helps!! thumbs_up.gif

As a nurse, I feel I must offer one small caution: make sure she can eat cookies because she may be on a very restricted diet for her CHF/congestive heart failure. To be on the safe side, before going to the trouble to ship the cookies, ask her daughter if she would be allowed to eat a treat like that.

Don't forget to mark fragile in really big letters!
I think it's great what you're doing for your friend. Send her best wishes from Delaware. Also, if you want more information on heart conditions, check the American Heart Association's website www.americanheart.org or try this link that will take you directly to information about this condition http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1486

Good idea SugarFrosted to check to see what she can and cannot have, she may be on a restricted diet.

I did not think of that either!!
Maybe this was not a good idea after all. I will ask if it is alright before I do it.
I guess even if she cannot eat them, she could look at them.
(Is that mean?)You know what I mean, If someone sent me something I could not have and it was pretty, just looking at it may make me feel better.
Or maybe not. Maybe that would be cruel.
OH, now I don't know what to do.

So sorry to hear about your friend! Prayers her way!!!!

I once sent cookies--over 400 of them!!!!-- to my now hubby in bootcamp! A LONG time ago! LOL He was amazed that they arrived in perfect condition and still soft. I was in Nevada and he was in Missouri!!!!!! They were toll house cookies. I took the size box I wanted and lined it with a large trash can liner-- You can use a smaller bag if you want, just make sure no scent or germ stuff, etc on it. Some bread slices on the bottom. (The cookies will take the moisture from the bread as they sit and the bread will dry up--just like it does in brown sugar!) I then put a layer of sort of wrinkled foil and a layer of cookies, and did it over and over again until I was done, ending with a layer of foil. Then, I put some more bread slices on top. I took the trash bag, twisted it and closed it up with a twist tie. I marked it fragile and away they went. I hope this helps!

Hope your friend feels better soon. God Bless, Donna

Thank you for showing me this!! I did not really know what this condition was until now reading it on that site! I am worried now because she told me the condition had gotten worse since her last trip to the hosp.

Should I maybe send some flowers and a card instead?

SugarFrosted's word of caution is well taken ...

But I would still send them, anyway. Your friend probably won't even FEEL like eating them, but she will be SO delighted and even overwhelmed by the fact that you went to all the effort and took the time to create and send them. And if she can't eat them, I'm sure her friends and family (and all the hospital staff) will be happy to enjoy them in her stead icon_wink.gif

She will simply treasure your heartfelt gift to her.

If the cookies are not an option as far as her diet is concerned, keep in mind it is the thought that counts most! When someone is feeling ill, any random act of kindness is always appreciated! Perhaps you could send her flowers, or even a book to help occupy her time! (Maybe even a cake book...I can loose myself for hours in a new Wilton yearbook or even a decorating magazine!)

Please let your friend know that she is in the thoughts of all CC members! CHF can make a person very tired, I hope she is feeling back to herself soon!

I think I will still send them! Maybe some flowers too!
That is a very good idea about the books! Last month I sent her all of my old Wilton yearbooks That I did not have room for anymore and she said she was in heaven! They were the books from the 70's and a couple of those celebrate books.
Maybe I can go and get her a really good cake book. She said she loves to look at the pictures(just like me!) Her and I can only dream of doing some of those beautiful cakes!

Or maybe one of those books by collette? (is that right?)
I heard that they are great. I have never seen them before.

I am sure she would love that!

Hey, thank you everyone for the great ideas and help!

We've shipped a BIG tin of cookies from Montreal a couple of times. The cookies were small sturdy types: shortbread, sugar shapes, molasses, etc.

Bubble wrap in the bottom -- always bubbles facing in towards the items to protect. Then a small piece of cardboard, if I remember right, and the cookies stacked into cupcake papers. Some bubble wrap down the sides, cut to fit, wouldn't hurt either. Fill the little holes in between with small cookies or (clean) packing worms or other padding. Another piece of bubble wrap on top. And lots of big wide tape! icon_biggrin.gif Give the box a GENTLE shake after and if you hear any rattling, repack because rattling will mean broken cookies.

This packaging survived being mailed to Winnipeg, only one cookie broke. Ditto for a tin down at the bottom of a suitcase lugged to Ohio. This same packaging went to my mom's cousin in Niagara Falls, and the box looked like someone used it for target practice! icon_cry.gif Here if your package arrives damaged you can get your postage $$$ back.

Other good candidates to mail include brownies, muffins, and loaves like banana bread or carrot cake. Something that can survive at room temperature for a few days. I would keep icings to a minimum, but make sure it's good and crusted before packing it up.

Best wishes to your friend, and good luck with the parcel! thumbs_up.gif

The Colette Peters books are amazing! (I have three of them...they are way above my level of expertise, but her designs are truly inspiring!) If this is something you are thinking about, they can be quite pricey...mine were about $35 - $40 EACH! You might want to consider checking on eBay or Amazon.com (or another type of shopping website) and having the book shipped directly to her, you can sometimes find some great deals on books on these sites, and...you will only pay to ship once if you have it sent to her and not to you!

Doing a search on eBay now...lots of choices on cake decorating books, some for only a few dollars (NOT the Colette books...sorry guys!) There are so many choices...if she liked the old yearbooks, she would love these! http://books.search.ebay.com/cake-book_Nonfiction-Books_W0QQcatrefZC12QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZ378

I have shipped cookies several times to my husband-deployed to Iraq. You can do 2 things. First if she lives far from you a food sealer worked perfectly to keep them tight and fresh. Second I just put them in a tin container and then added packing peanuts to the box. He got them and they tasted great and were still in good condition. Trust me it gets very hot in Iraq! Hope this helps.
I feel your pain for your friend- my dad has the same thing. My prayers are with her and her family

I am sorry to hear about your friend!

I haven't had a chance to read through the entire thread, but I have shipped cookies many a time while my kids were in college! The only kind I have shipped though were sturdy cookies, never shipped iced or thin cookies. (I am talking about oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip and things like that)

After the cookies have cooled, I wrap each cookie tightly in wax paper, then put them in a good strong tin, or large coffee can. I then put some brown shipping paper crumbled on the bottom and then put the can in and then put the paper all around the sides and some on top. This way it doesn't get shaken around too much.

I don't like peanuts because they are such a big mess for people to deal with when they get there, but you could use bubble wrap and just wrap the tin as well. I always just found paper easier, cheaper and it does a good job.

Make sure you also use a really good sturdy box. You don't want holes punched in it by a fast conveyor!! (I have seen the one these overnight companies use and I am amazed anything survives! hahaha)

Oh and do ship it overnight.

I hope your friend feels better soon!! (You also may want to make sure she isn't on a restricted diet...if so, perhaps a gift certicate would be handy?)

Thanks guys! I got up this morning I think with a clearer head and already I am looking at the books on ebay and I was thinking about a gift certificate too!

I still want to try to send the cookies, but I think I will wait a few days because the heat here the next few days is going to be in the upper 90's!

I am very thankful for all of your help! When I heard the news last night, it really upset me because of all of the help this person has given me! I never met her in person but We have talked back in forth over the past year or so though email and phone. She talked me through some really depressing times and really lifted my spirits.

I feel that I owe it to her to return the kindness!
I read a bit more on her condition and I do not really know how much time she has left so I want to help make the time she has a bit more pleasant.

Once again, Thank you all!!
