Hello everyone. I wanted to say that first those 2 days without CC were insane. I kept thinking something was wrong with MY computer until I finally got the message that it was down. But I also wanted to say that I just recv'd my letter from Johnson and Wales that I got accepted. I was planning on enrolling in the culinary program. I told my husband who just blew it off, can you believe that! I can't go because we can't afford it but I just wanted to see if I could get in and I did. I just wanted to share it with someone, anyone because my DH doesn't seem to care and it would be nice if he could have atleast acknowledged it and said congrats. Thanks for letting me vent.

Meredith,
That is great! Congrats! It's nice to have your talents validated by someone unbiased.
Ignore your hubby. Sometimes they just don't get it. But that's what we're here for!

Now that you are in . . . check on the availability of student grants, aid, etc. You might qualify. . . talk with one of their counselors. You've crossed the biggest hurdle, there are lots of folks out there willing to help someone who wants to succeed!! Go for IT!! I'm proud of you!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!
I'm starting a basic culinary course through Durham Tech this fall, myself!

Would you qualify for a scholarship? This sounds like a dream and even if the hubby doesn't share it, you should at least see how far you can get. You've been accepted, now try and find the funding. Good Luck!

Congratulations! I hope you can find a way to go, that would be such an awesome experience. My husband told me to apply, but we couldn't move and I wouldn't leave my kids to go.

Meredith, that is AWESOME!

PLEASE do what others have urged you here, and look into grants and financial aid in order to help you get through the program. In fact, check with J&W first for anything they might offer, financial-aid-wise. You never know ...

In fact, our middle daughter is about to graduate with her BS in Hotel/Restaurant Management from the Hilton College -- she's had federal grants, state grants, scholarships from the college, and from the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF). I forget now what their requirements are, but be sure and check out the NRAEF. They've been most helpful.

And -- CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

You ladies are great, thanks so much for the encouragement. See the problem is that right now I'm attending the local community college to get my AA and I've been talking about pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. When I lived in Ky. for awhile I attended college there part-time and sometimes full-time and got loans which helped with school and living arangements. Now I'm strapped with school loans totaling $40,000. Yes I got way over my head, but I was young and stupid and took out loans thinking I would be able to pay them back. Needless to say they are in deferment, but I pay alittle a month, hey something is better than nothing. So anyway, I definetly do not need anymore loans. I did just get off the phone with my mom and she was so proud. She said I should take some classes at the community college in culinary atrs since I'm already attending and it is much cheaper. I did look into what they offered before I applied to J&W, so maybe that's an idea. I'm still not sure if I want to give up on getting my degree in Elem Educ. I guess you could say I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, LOL.

ok...as a teacher of 30+ years....

consider carefully.

right now...I wouldn NOT NOT NOT NOT reccomend anyone going into teaching because:
>low pay (had to do summer school to pay bills and starting cake biz for this reason also)
>low benefits (and don't even talk to me about "summers off! HA! what a crock...two workshops I have to attend this summer!! plus CEUs to earn, new syllabus to write for a textbook that's not even in yet..but hey have to have it ready day one....)
>lack of community support....the student is always right! -- no, not giving you enough money to...(meet mandates, have adequet supplies, etc.)
>lack of parent support ... my kids an angel/so smart...how dare you say misbehaving or failing...it must be all YOUR fault
>lack of admin support (see previous two--after all they have to play to them or lose their job)
>more and more expected with fewer and fewer resources available.
>the legalities keep piling up and up. 30 years ago could hug a child or even a teen -- now CHILD ABUSE!!!
-------
the only way, if I were starting now, would be if it were in a parochial school and definately NOT a public school (and haveing taught it both I know where of I speak)
---------
sorry if this sounds a tab bitter...but it is...
I too went into education all starry-eyed and determined to make a difference. Stars long gone, difference made ... don't know...I know I've change and not all for the better.
---------
pro chef is demanding work but rewarding so much better than teaching in so many ways
-------
but it comes down to one question:

what's your passion?

Hi Everyone: So glad to see the CC is back. Now my question is what school is J&W? I've been checking into the French culinary school in NY and really want to go but the issue is of course: MONEY. They just raised to tution to $36,000 for nine months of education, but what a thrill it would be to attend. Vicki0052. PS. I'm 53 and really don't need to have any large bills following me to my grave, but I still would love to go.

OH how exciting! I hope you will at least be able take some culinary courses somewhere. If I could do my life over I would be enrolling in culinary school. My son went to Paul Smith's up in the Adirondacks and got his degree in baking. He loved it. If only I had known when I was 18 what I know now.

FIND A WAY!!!!

My grandmother worked in the school system, and did cakes on the side. Since I started thinking about what to do (16 years ago and just decided recently) she said GO TO CULINARY SCHOOL. I didn't listen, but wish I had...

She also said "Never trust a skinny cook." Better advice was never spoken icon_smile.gif

Congratulations, Meredith. How awesome is that?

Well, I will say this, and it's long........

Twenty years ago, I wanted to go to nursing school. The school I wanted to go to was known for being hard to get into, and it was also "common knowledge" that nobody got in on their first try. So I tried, figuring, okay, this is my first try, and I'll be all ready to go the next time, or the time after that, when I can get accepted. You got it - I was accepted the first time. So I prayed about it. I said God, you got me in, and the only way I can make it through is if you provide the way. Well, He did. Sometimes I didn't know how He could, but He did. Every time there was a need, and believe me, there were plenty of needs, He provided the money, sometimes in the oddest ways....... I graduated, and I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that nursing is what God wants me doing as a full-time job, because I couldn't have been doing it without Him. My point is, if God takes you to it, He will get you through it.

All I can say is pray about it, and see what happens.........
