I'm making a 1st communion cake today, and I need to make about a 4-6" cross. I was thinking about using something like a #5 tip and just piping out a cross and then smooth it with a spatula, or using a #47 basketweave tip and using it upside-down so it would be smooth instead of the ridges....does anyone have any suggestions?

If you have a cookie cutter in the size cross you can imprint it on your crusted icing and then decorate from there. You could also draw out exactly what you want and do a gel transfer, then decorate as you like. Hope some of this helps. Good Luck!!

If you're really steady...I think it'll come out great! I'm not. I'd have to cut it out of fondant to get it perfectly straight.
