Hey CC Users,

I am trying to make graduation cap cake and I was wanting to know what is mortar board that I see that so many people say that they use for the top of the hat? Hope someone can help me.

I used fondant for mine. Just roll it out and cut a square the size you want and let it air dry. Button on top is just a piece of fondant cut out using an icing tip.

I used a 6" round cake for the cap part and used fondant on top of cardboard/cake board for the mortar. I also cut strips of fondant for the tassel. My 6" was all in buttercream. I did 2 last week and they looked great. I assume that is how others were doing it. ??? Good luck!

Licia,
A mortar board is actually the NAME of the square part of the graduation hat. It's not a type of board. You can make it out of fondant or qumpaste or even cover a piece of cardboard with fondant to make it. HTH
